With 30 delicious options on the menu and fun sandwich names ranging from Mickey Scars to Vinnie the Butcher, it’s no wonder DiSO’s gourmet Italian sandwich food truck has made such a huge splash. They offer fresh sandwiches made from fine, imported Italian meats and cheeses from Di Palo’s in Little Italy.

This week, we were able to talk to the man behind this amazing Italian sandwich truck, Adam DiSilvestro. Adam started feeding New Yorkers about a year and a half ago and through word of mouth, loyal customers and genuinely great food his food truck has been growing a following ever since– it’s safe to say Adam’s got an awesome thing going!

He’s always been interested in food. Coming from an Italian family, “Food was something I have always wanted to try and experience in some way, so I wanted to try something classic, like an Italian sandwich stop.”

DiSO’s is a familiar name in the food community. They’re known for their long menu of any and every Italians sandwich that comes to mind. People used to tell Adam, “Take our advice, you have to cut this list down, simplify it,” and he would reply, “you know what, I have a vision and I’m just going to go with it.” Let’s all take a minute to thank Adam for sticking with his vision and offering NYC some of the best sandwiches.

Picking a sandwich is one of the more difficult things to do at DiSO’s. Some of his customers will “start at the top of the menu and work their way down.” It’s a pretty genius strategy that we at FoodtoEat probably need to try in the name of science (read: for incredible food).

Their handmade sandwiches call for a mouth-watering experience. One of their specialties, Joey Shake, is filled with Prosciutto, capicola, salami, provolone cheese, hot cherry peppers, arugula, parmigiano reggiano cheese, herbed ricotta spread, glazed balsamic dressing. You read that right; 9 ingredients, 1 sandwich. This heavenly creation is described as “the works of the Italian hero.”

If you haven’t heard yet, Papaya King, the well-known NYC hot dog and fruity drinks restaurant now has its own food truck bringing hot dog loving to the streets.

Let’s rewind about 80 years ago. It’s 1932 and Gus Poulos, the founder, literally the “Papaya King” if you will, discovered papaya on a vacation to Miami. He shortly began importing the fruit to New York to make his own tropical drink. A great idea, but sadly no one came to try the drink so Gus decided to dress girls up in hula skirts and gave the drinks away for free – creative marketing for that time. New Yorkers quickly became hooked. He was inspired by his girlfriend to bring frankfurters to his juice stand on 86th and 3rd Avenue. And that was the birth of a NYC classic.

Along with their two locations on 86th and Marks Place, their bright yellow truck can be found roaming around midtown and sometimes at The Seaport.

Last week, we sat down with Wayne Rosenbaum and Jason Witkes of Papaya King to chat about their new food truck (and they fed us amazing hot dogs and fried oreos!). Wayne is really enjoying the food truck business so far. “I love it! It’s definitely different than the store, a lot more logistically challenging because of space, but we have the same methods as we do in the store. Everything is exactly the same, ” he said enthusiastically.

Wayne’s love for hot dogs sparked his creative imagination while experimenting with new recipes. His newest addition to the food truck, The Crunchy Munch, is one hot dog you definitely do not want to miss. Filled with jalapeños, sweetened pickles, sautéed onions, and crunchy potato sticks, your taste buds will be in hot dog heaven.

In New York, there are millions of places to grab a hot dog on the go, but none of them beats Papaya King, an establishment so intricately connected to the city and the heart of food entrepreneurs; a man who started with just a juice stand, ended up creating a delicious empire and now is returning to its roots and back to the streets with a food truck. Wayne says, “We have been an 82-year old brand, since 1932. So with that we are the first branded hot dog truck in history in New York.” You don’t hear that everyday from a hot dog restaurant!

Wayne and Jason have their hot dog system down to a science. New York now has its options between St. Marks place, 86th street, or their new restaurant on wheels! At the end of the day, Papaya King is a fun restaurant and food truck where there is a flavorful mix of hot dogs and fruity drinks that will leave you wanting more.

This week, I had the pleasure of meeting the southern gentleman behind New York’s most patriotic food truck, Josh Gatewood. Not only does Josh have making delicious southern fried chicken down to a science; he’s got an incredible story. He chose a life on food stamps and working as a fry cook over being a broker on Wall Street – all for the dream of opening his food truck.

Yankee Doodle Dandy’s, one of the newest food trucks to hit the streets, has been a long time coming. Josh admitted he spent more time thinking about his potential business than focusing on the Series 7. He would “Walk around Wall Street quizzing people, ‘what’s a better name for a chicken restaurant? Yankee’s Chicken or Yankee Doodle Dandy’s?’ ” With a stroke of luck and a $25,000 win from Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, Josh was able to give his dream some momentum.

Josh’s perseverance and dedication has brought him to where he is today – owning one of New York’s only authentic southern food trucks. Josh is committed to making his food the best it can possibly be and it definitely shows.

Their Winner Winner fried chicken special is everything you would want in a southern dish – juicy, well-seasoned and best of all: big portions. Along with four incredible chicken tenders, it is served with a giant slice of  grilled Texas toast, homemade potato salad and their original Spirit of ’76 sauce. Words cannot properly describe how delicious the Spirit of ’76 sauce is with the chicken tenders and fries. Josh says, “People come back just for the sauce.” At only $8.50, this special is a total “winner.”

At the end of the day, Yankee Doodle Dandy’s is all about bringing southern hospitality and authenticity to New York City and hopefully expanding to other major cities. Josh said, “It was roller coaster getting here. Sometimes you have those introspective moments you feel super blessed to be doing what you’re doing.”

On Thanksgiving, Deepti is known for making delicious mashed potatoes and pumpkin chocolate chip cookies. She is grateful for her family, friends and the team at FoodtoEat.  Also, fall leaves make her super happy. “Abhinav’s family does Thanksgiving at their house every year. Waking up at 7am and cooking with his mum and sister all day is probably one of my favorite things ever,” Deepti says.

“So simple, but so delicious. I can eat my family’s homemade mash all day long,” Diana says. She’s famous for making really yummy deviled eggs. One of her best memories of Thanksgiving as a child was going around the table with her whole extended family and saying what each person was thankful for. “It was always really silly or really sweet,” Diana recalls. She’s grateful that Thanksgiving brings people together.

“Turducken! Turkey stuffed with duck stuffed with chicken- it’s a Texas favorite,” says Alex, who hails from Houston. She is known for making a scrumptious stuffing every Thanksgiving. Her favorite holiday memory is when her mom let the family dog (a maltese!) sit at the table during dinner. She’s incredibly grateful for having parents who have supported her move to NYC post-college. She’s loving her new life and her new job. “I feel very fortunate to actually enjoy the company of my coworkers and look forward to coming into the office with my team everyday,” Alex says.
  
Ashwin’s Favorite Thanksgiving Dish: To Be Determined

Ashwin hasn’t had a chance to have a real Thanksgiving yet (don’t worry – we plan to make sure he does!). He really likes Japanese food though. He’s (in)famous for making an amazing hot sauce. He remembers his first Thanksgiving: “Freshman year in college dorm. Two months into the US. The whole town left for home. Didn’t see a face for 2 days straight and was feeding off of 50 cent ramen from a nearby 7-11.” Ashwin is grateful that he’s come a long way since those ramen-eating days.

Pinky had her first Thanksgiving last year with her old roomies and had a great time. “Last year was my first Thanksgiving that I celebrated in American style, and I made brownies. Everyone ate it, so I guess it was good,” she says. She is grateful to be around the best people on Earth. She says the Team is awesome and obviously, we think Pinky is really awesome too!

In addition to post-Thanksgiving sandwiches, Div loves Thanksgiving sides including candied yam, mashed potatoes with gravy and really buttery corn on the cob. Back in college, he was in charge of making the turkey, but now he dreams of baking pecan pies (we’ll be the taste testers). He thinks making hand Turkeys in kindergarten was awesome and totally wants the entire team to make them now. He’s incredibly thankful for “having a wonderful family and a few close friends to share my problems with and the American farmer for bringing delicious produce to my table.”

Debra’s a big fan of trying new recipes for Thanksgiving. Last year, she made Baltimore-style lump crab cakes and a poached pear almond tart. Her favorite memory is that of when she was little and she, along with her siblings and cousins would play hide-and-seek after eating a huge Thanksgiving dinner. Now that they’re all much older, running around has become laying around in a food-induced coma. Debra is grateful for how lucky she’s been to have had all the opportunities she’s had in her life!

When it comes to sushi in Greenwich Village, Yummy Village Sushi really can’t be beat.  The combination of phenomenal prices and quality make it one of Greenwich Village’s best kept secrets.  Yummy Village Sushi is open from 4 PM to 4AM, which makes it an excellent place to satisfy those late-night sushi cravings.  If you’re not a late-night goer, Yummy Village Sushi rewards you with their biggest attraction: 50% of their House Specials menu, which includes a California Roll for $2.38, a Sushi Regular combo for $9.88, a Chicken Teriyaki Entree for $7.38, a Salmon Teriyaki Entree for $8.88, and more.  For all those sake lovers out there, Yummy Village Sushi offers a buy-one-get-one-free offer for their hot sake, $5 for a small and $9 for a large.  More often than not, the chef throws in a free appetizer that can be anything from white fish tempura to edamame.

I stumbled into Yummy Village Sushi while scoping out the sushi joints in the neighborhood, hopefully looking to find a place where I could become a regular.  I was not disappointed, as I was greeted by an attentive waitress and grandpa-like sushi chef.  The great thing about this restaurant is that it is family owned, which means that your business won’t go towards some multi-million dollar chain, but instead to a sustainable small business.  The place is small but has a nice ambiance that is cozy and laid back.  Lovebirds, NYU students, neighborhood regulars, and even the occasional tourist, can be found at this hidden gem.

Sushi is one of those things where you almost always get what you pay for.  But not at Yummy Village Sushi! Their sushi is well made, fast, and prepared by chefs that know what they’re doing.  On top of their delicious food, their prices are sure to keep you coming back for more.
