maison sign The word éclair in French means flash of lightning, which pretty much sums up how quickly most people gobble these decadent treats up. Cynthia Balli, Founder of Maison de L’eclair, started a business featuring these desserts with both a sweet and a savory twist – savory eclair sandwiches. Cynthia was raised in Geneva and Paris, attended École hôtelière de Lausanne for hospitality and then earned her Masters in entrepreneurship in the US.

For Cynthia, her love of eclairs stem from childhood. Specifically, the 4 o’clock family tea time with pastries of which eclairs played a huge part. While reminiscing of fond food memories, she realized with age and maturing palates, there was a need for savory eclairs. Cynthia’s eclair favorites are her savory Smoked Salmon & Cream Cheese eclair and her Milk Chocolate & Bananas sweet eclair.

At the moment Maison De L’Eclair is an online business but she hopes to open a brick and mortar soon.

Their lunch deal comes with 2 savory eclairs, one sweet and a side salad. My personal favorite was the coffee eclair. It was very rich and the coffee flavor was spot on. It just hit the spot for me. The smoked salmon & cream cheese is a popular one and after one bite, I can clearly see why it’s so well-liked. These eclairs are catered to various tastes from vegetarians to meat eaters so you’re bound to have a favorite!

Lumpia Shack | Filipino Food in New York City

Lumpia Shack is a small West Village snack bar serving up all sorts of Filipino-inspired goodies. You’ll be in for a treat no matter what you decide to try – from their famous lumpias or their rice bowls. What makes lumpia so special? Well…who doesn’t love a fried spring roll? Neil Syham, owner of Lumpia Shack, wanted to introduce people to Filipino food through lumpias as a medium since they pack a ton of  flavor and are easy to eat.

Neil opened Lumpia Shack to diversify the Asian cuisine. When talking about Asian cuisine, people mainly think of Japanese, Chinese, Korean or Thai – however he wanted to put Filipino cuisine on the map – and we’re so thankful he did because it is absolutely delicious. Their lumpias are what the people initially come for, but Lumpia Shack’s other dishes are not to be overlooked. Neil’s favorite lumpia is the original pork as it reminds him of his childhood meals with family and friends. He created the Adobo Mushroom Lumpia for his wife since she’s a vegetarian. Other well-known dishes are Sisig (pork belly, jowls, ears, egg yolk, and calamansi), which was featured in the New York Times in 2014, and the crowd favorite, Adobo Chicken – chicken stewed in vinegar, garlic, soy sauce, bay leaves and peppercorn..

I had a chance to try their food and boy, was I a happy camper. The pork belly was just heavenly – it was melt-in-your mouth experience and so was the super moist chicken. Every bite I had was perfectly tender and flavorful. Their lumpias were crispy and tasty – I can see why everyone raves about them.

I didn’t get a chance to try an Adobo Ramen Burger which is a fusion of Lumpia Shack’s pork belly & Keizo Shimamoto’s ramen bun, but it sure made my mouth water thinking about it. They have some secret collaborations coming up with their fellow Smorgasburg vendors but we’ll have to wait and see. For now, we’ll enjoy the seasonal items. This season, they’re dishing out Kabocha squash soup with coconut milk and topped with coconut yogurt and sage.

Scare People With Your Food!

Halloween is just around the corner, which means frightening parties and delicious treats. Scare your guests with some Halloween addons!
Here are 5 tips on how to make your food spookier:

 

 1. Add dry ice to your drinks~mistystix-645x387

 Dry ice provides a haunting effect of clouds, puffs of smoke that will spill over the edge for that creepy feel. It also keeps the drinks cool as ice should. Be cautious when handling the ice as it can cause burns/frostbites.

 

2. What screams blood better than some ketchup!

 Maybe ketchup doesn’t have that deep dark color that blood has or it’s too thick but that’s no problem at all. Mix ketchup with some water and corn syrup to fix the consistency of the ketchup and adding some drop of red food coloring can do the trick for this bloody mess.

 

3. The insect we all despise, cockroaches.

Decorate your sweet treats or top off the cakes with these crawly creatures. To make a creepy crawler, you’ll need some dates, walnuts or almonds, cream cheese and scallions tops. Stuff the date with some creamed cheese and chopped almonds or walnuts for the crunch! Use the scallion tops to poke in for the antennae.

 

4. Insert sweet shards of glass.enhanced-buzz-578-1381308642-5It’s really simple to make, all you need is some granulated sugar and water. Bring the two to a boil in a pot, when the sugar dissolves, pour the liquid into a baking sheet and tilt it to fill the pan. Let it rest and harden. After it has cooled twist the sheet and break in any shape. Do warn your guests before eating, we wouldn’t want any blood or broken teeth.

 

5. How about some worms? Worm-Sammy-from-Our-Best-BitesJust slice hot dogs and drop them into boiling water to cook, so they have a curl factor. You can throw them into sandwiches and top them with some BBQ sauce. If you don’t like them in a sandwich form no worries, throw them into some chili to resemble dirt.

Porchetta: A Taste of Italian Street Food in New York City

Porchetta is a tiny East Village shop that does its namesake justice. Their goal was to perfect the art of making porchetta sandwiches, a traditional Italian street food that is hard to find in the city. What makes Porchetta so special, you ask? The answer is easy; the Porchetta sandwich is the kind of food that stuns because it’s simplicity marrying quality. They’ve got the recipe down to a science, perfected the tender sandwich and intend to keep it that way.

The owners, Sara Jenkins and Matt Lindemulder, strive to create something unique, consistent and affordable for city-goers that are looking for a quick bite. The pork is cooked slowly and is just about everything you would want on a sandwich. The meat is juicy, crispy and soft. The bread is crunchy. In short, it’s roasted perfection.

Thirty Sandwiches, One Truck: The Magic Behind DiSO’s Italian Sandwich Society

With 30 delicious options on the menu and fun sandwich names ranging from Mickey Scars to Vinnie the Butcher, it’s no wonder DiSO’s gourmet Italian sandwich food truck has made such a huge splash. They offer fresh sandwiches made from fine, imported Italian meats and cheeses from Di Palo’s in Little Italy.

This week, we were able to talk to the man behind this amazing Italian sandwich truck, Adam DiSilvestro. Adam started feeding New Yorkers about a year and a half ago and through word of mouth, loyal customers and genuinely great food his food truck has been growing a following ever since– it’s safe to say Adam’s got an awesome thing going!

He’s always been interested in food. Coming from an Italian family, “Food was something I have always wanted to try and experience in some way, so I wanted to try something classic, like an Italian sandwich stop.”

DiSO’s is a familiar name in the food community. They’re known for their long menu of any and every Italians sandwich that comes to mind. People used to tell Adam, “Take our advice, you have to cut this list down, simplify it,” and he would reply, “you know what, I have a vision and I’m just going to go with it.” Let’s all take a minute to thank Adam for sticking with his vision and offering NYC some of the best sandwiches.

Picking a sandwich is one of the more difficult things to do at DiSO’s. Some of his customers will “start at the top of the menu and work their way down.” It’s a pretty genius strategy that we at FoodtoEat probably need to try in the name of science (read: for incredible food).

Their handmade sandwiches call for a mouth-watering experience. One of their specialties, Joey Shake, is filled with Prosciutto, capicola, salami, provolone cheese, hot cherry peppers, arugula, parmigiano reggiano cheese, herbed ricotta spread, glazed balsamic dressing. You read that right; 9 ingredients, 1 sandwich. This heavenly creation is described as “the works of the Italian hero.”

Eggstravaganza: the Eggcellent Truck Taking Over New York’s Breakfast Scene

If you’ve ever explored Midtown, you know the Eggstravaganza cart has been a staple for years. Recently though, the cart has been upgraded to a brand new Eggstravaganza food truck! This week, I was able to meet the man behind the truck, Arturo Macedo, the owner and founder of Eggstravaganza. His journey started with working in a restaurant 15 years ago and he’s been in the food business ever since,  “A friend introduced me into the business and it looked interesting to me. So, I decided to start a mini food cart.”

We should all be very thankful for his friend because the Eggstravaganza truck is an awesomely unique take on the New York breakfast scene.

The new truck started taking on the streets of Manhattan just three months ago and the menu has grown because of the newfound space. It has something for everybody; from New York inspired breakfast wraps, like the Stock Broker (egg whites, mushroom, avocado and cheese) to classic sandwiches, like bacon, egg and cheese. Not feeling breakfast? Eggstravaganza also serves lunch! Their Three Amigos hero is bound to please any meat lover (chorizo, chicken and skirt steak) and the Mambo Italiano wrap (roasted vegetables, mozzarella and Italian seasoning) is a favorite with the veggie crowd.

When I asked how he comes up with his recipes? It’s a family affair, “We get the family together, kids, cousins; my wife is the toughest critic. We’ll say, ‘put this one in here, here and here’ and that’s how we work on the next recipe.” You know the food is good when kids are giving it the thumbs up.

I tried one of their most popular menu items; the Mexican wrap and I can definitely see why it’s so popular. The ingredients include: eggs (obviously!), grilled onion, pepper, Mexican potatoes, chorizo fresco and cheese on a tomato basil wrap. This wrap? It transcends the breakfast realm. I would probably eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner if I could. It’s got everything you’d want for breakfast combined in one satisfying wrap. It’s a great way to kickstart your early mornings in the city.
