Sweet Chili: Thaietnamese Food With a Side of Power Ballads

By Emily Collins swtr Behind the Food Truck is a FoodtoEat original series where we meet the amazing men and women behind our favorite mobile cuisines and share their inspiring stories. At FoodtoEat, we’re lucky to have the best food trucks NYC has to offer in our family. Here are their stories.

This week, I was able to meet one of New York City’s local food-lebrities, Lisa Fernandes. Lisa is the passionate chef and owner behind Sweet Chili – a “Thai-etnamese” truck with a menu full of original and incredible recipes by Lisa herself! If you didn’t know already, Lisa was the runner-up on season 4 of Top Chef, so you’re literally trying some of her winning recipes from the show.

All throughout Lisa’s life, food was her passion. She started with her mom in the kitchen, served ice cream at the mall as a teen and went on to culinary school to pursue her dream of becoming a professional chef! It’s not very often you meet someone who can say they genuinely wake up every day and want to go to work, but Lisa does. She loves her customers and makes an effort to learn their names and wants the experience to be not only delicious, but entertaining! “We make it personal, we have a good time with them, we play fun music, we’re not prim and proper, ‘good afternoon, how may we help you today?’ ” And it definitely works for them. You can walk up to Sweet Chili, get on-the-go restaurant quality food, a 1980s power ballad serenade and maybe even a Vietnamese coffee sample if you’re dancing!

Her favorite thing about owning a food truck? “We have fun! People can relate to us. They say, ‘I’m not in the mood for that today, can you just make me something?’ and we just make stuff up. People like that. You can’t do that in a restaurant.” I was able to see this first hand when I asked Lisa and her team to just “make me anything” on the menu. I was served with their flavorful Heavenly Beef over white rice with bean sprout salad and was recommended by Lisa “get the fried egg on top, it makes everything better!” She was right; the dish was indeed heavenly and the fried egg? A perfect companion to the sweet and spicy dish.

At the end of the day, Lisa’s goal is to serve up unique, amazing dishes while giving the best experience to the customer, “If you’re in a good mood when you make the food, and the person’s in a good mood when they get the food, they’re going to be in a good mood when they eat the food.” You can check out Lisa and the Sweet Chili team this summer at their frequent spots, South Street Seaport and DUMBO Lot during the week and Governor’s Island on weekends for dancing to 80s and 90s jams and cooking some of the best Thai-etnamese food in New York City!

Which Food Trucks Would Your Favorite Game of Thrones Characters Absolutely Love?

By Emily Collins

Here in New York City, we’re lucky enough to have access to some of the most fantastic restaurants, food trucks and carts to exist. Unfortunately for Westeros, the food truck trend just has not caught on, but we’re dreamers here at FoodtoEat and matched a few of our favorite Game of Thrones characters with some of our local food trucks and carts.

Tyrion and Taco from Kimchi Taco Truck

Tyrion Lannister might be a small guy, but he certainly knows how to pack a big punch (or slap if you’re Joffrey). His personality always leaves you wanting to know more. This is exactly how we feel about spicy grilled chicken mini tacos from Kimchi Taco Truck. These tacos may be mini, but with ingredients like cilantro and kimchi chipotle aioli, they come with quite the kick.

Daenerys and Eggs from Eggstravaganza

If you follow Game of Thrones, you know Daenerys is the mother of dragons. Her dragon eggs are incredibly rare, but Daenerys managed to hatch three on the show. Luckily, here in NYC [chicken] eggs aren’t extinct (although dragon eggs are still hard/impossible to come by). If you share Daenerys’ passion for eggs, head over to the Eggstravaganza Cart! Every morning, they serve several different egg dishes: from classic western omelets to Mexican wraps with eggs, chorizo, potatoes and much more. We are certain Daenerys would be very pleased with Eggstravaganza.

Joffrey and Jerk Chicken from Veronica’s Kitchen

Veronica’s Kitchen Food Cart offers delicious Caribbean food with some of Joffrey’s most notable traits. Joffrey has quite a fiery personality, so why not try Veronica’s spicy curry? Knowing King Joffrey, he would pick a dish like stew “king” fish, but we see him as more of a “jerk” chicken kind of guy.

“Saltdean Sizzler” Soon to Be Named World’s Spiciest Pie

Paul’s Pizza of Brighton, England has rolled out the Saltdean Sizzler, which may soon hold the record for the World’s Spiciest Pizza.

Ghost chilies and chili extract make the pie a killer. The pizza is supposedly hotter than the world’s strongest chili, the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion and stronger than a police-grade pepper spray at 3.2 million units on the Scoville scale— a measure of heat indicating the amount of capsaicin present.

Paul Brayshaw, the owner of Paul’s Pizza, decided to come up with the fiery option after watching “Man Vs. Food” on the Travel Channel. Only eight men and one woman have successfully eaten the entire pie. Nine successfully ate the pie, that is, out of 1,307 pizzas sold in the last year. Those who fail to complete the challenge are placed on the shop’s “Wall of Shame.” Brayshaw himself can only eat 2 out of the pie’s 6 slices.

The pizza is currently being tested by Guinness World Records, however, the previous contender clocked in at a “mere” 1 million Scoville units.

The shop closes its takeout at 10PM, before the local bars close, in order to prevent drunk people from accidentally ordering the pie.

Heinz Unveils Ketchup Blended with Real Jalapenos

It seems like I have been waiting my entire life for this invention; “Heinz Tomato Ketchup blended with Real Jalapenos” promises to bridge the gap between two great condiments. Ketchup alone sometimes lacks a kick that we desire in our food, and hot sauce usually isn’t thick enough to be a proper condiment for a burger or as a dipping sauce. Now Heinz is releasing this new limited edition ketchup set to hit shelves in January, 2013.

For those eager fans out there (myself included) Heinz is selling a few bottles through Facebook from November 26th through December 7th. These bottles will sell for $4.99 via Facebook, pricier than the regular retail price of $2.49. This immediate release will be known as “12 days of Jalapeno Ketchup”, with an added incentive of ordering two to five bottles and getting one free.

Heinz has already released another variety of ketchup, “Heinz hot & Spicy Ketchup” made from Tabasco sauce. According to the website Investors.com, the “new Heinz Tomato Ketchup blended with Real Jalapeno is the same hick, rich tomato ketchup that consumers love, with one ingredient added – real jalapenos. The unique, hot flavor is perfect for adding a kick to breakfast favorites like eggs and hash browns, or spicing up classics like burgers and fries.”

Heinz believes that releasing this product for the holiday season might kick up enthusiasm for the brand and be incorporated in holiday recipes. “We’re excited to offer our newest limited edition flavor just in time for the holidays,” said Eric Dahmer, senior board manager for Heinz Ketchup. “It makes the perfect stocking stuffer for the friend or family member who likes to add a little kick to their meals.”
