With 30 delicious options on the menu and fun sandwich names ranging from Mickey Scars to Vinnie the Butcher, it’s no wonder DiSO’s gourmet Italian sandwich food truck has made such a huge splash. They offer fresh sandwiches made from fine, imported Italian meats and cheeses from Di Palo’s in Little Italy.

This week, we were able to talk to the man behind this amazing Italian sandwich truck, Adam DiSilvestro. Adam started feeding New Yorkers about a year and a half ago and through word of mouth, loyal customers and genuinely great food his food truck has been growing a following ever since– it’s safe to say Adam’s got an awesome thing going!

He’s always been interested in food. Coming from an Italian family, “Food was something I have always wanted to try and experience in some way, so I wanted to try something classic, like an Italian sandwich stop.”

DiSO’s is a familiar name in the food community. They’re known for their long menu of any and every Italians sandwich that comes to mind. People used to tell Adam, “Take our advice, you have to cut this list down, simplify it,” and he would reply, “you know what, I have a vision and I’m just going to go with it.” Let’s all take a minute to thank Adam for sticking with his vision and offering NYC some of the best sandwiches.

Picking a sandwich is one of the more difficult things to do at DiSO’s. Some of his customers will “start at the top of the menu and work their way down.” It’s a pretty genius strategy that we at FoodtoEat probably need to try in the name of science (read: for incredible food).

Their handmade sandwiches call for a mouth-watering experience. One of their specialties, Joey Shake, is filled with Prosciutto, capicola, salami, provolone cheese, hot cherry peppers, arugula, parmigiano reggiano cheese, herbed ricotta spread, glazed balsamic dressing. You read that right; 9 ingredients, 1 sandwich. This heavenly creation is described as “the works of the Italian hero.”

The 1920s brought an exciting moment to America: the invention of the grilled cheese sandwich, also known as cheese dream. The inexpensive bread and American cheese became easily accessible during the Great Depression. Let’s take a moment to thank the inventor of this magical sandwich that we love dearly.

Phil’s Steaks: Philly Cheesesteak

We have to thank Pat and Harry Olivieri for stumbling upon the creation of the Philly Cheesesteak sandwich in the 1930s. They originally owned a hotdog stand, but decided to experiment by making a sandwich with chopped beef and grilled onions. It was a cab driver passing by that convinced them to start selling this exquisite new sandwich.

Known as NYC’s All-American food truck, from the name  to the decor of the truck (see below!), Yankee Doodle Dandy’s is probably the most patriotic food truck roaming the streets of NYC.

Their menu offers an excellent American combination of Southern goodness ranging from Buffalo Soldier to America the Beautiful Salad (yes, even the names are patriotic).  The Winner Winner fried chicken special is heavenly. Happy National Grilled Cheese Month! 3 Ways to Revamp Your Favorite Classic

Grilled cheese: An American classic, a staple of your childhood. The tasty, quick meal has come very far in the past few years and even has the entire month of April to celebrate its deliciousness. We all have our tried and true favorites, but to celebrate the delightful sandwich, here are some great, new ways to revamp your classic comfort food!

1. The Grilled Cheese Roll

First up is my personal favorite: the grilled cheese roll. They’re adorable, functional and only take about 10 minutes to prepare. These treats are perfect for a party appetizer or to eat on the go. If you like tomato soup with your grilled cheese, this recipe is the best way to maximize your dunking experience!

Ingredients:

  • 2 slices of your favorite type of pre-sliced bread
  • 2 slices of American cheese
  • 2 tbsp of butter
  • Optional: a can of tomato soup

Directions:

  1. Take your two slices of bread (or more if it’s for a party!) and cut off the crust.
  2. Use a rolling pin to flatten your bread. If you don’t have one, a wine bottle always works.
  3. Take your slices of American cheese and place them on the flattened bread.
  4. Take the bread and cheese and roll it very tightly.
  5. In the meantime, take your 2 tbsp of butter and let it simmer in a frying pan on medium heat.
  6. Make sure your grilled cheese rolls are nice and tight and place them seam down in the pan. This will prevent your grilled cheese rolls from unrolling in the pan.
  7. Once the edge is sealed, flip the rolls so they’re cooked evenly for 4-5 minutes.
  8. Serve on a plate with a bowl of tomato soup while they’re still hot!

2. The Lazy Grilled Cheese

Next up is what I like to call “the lazy grilled cheese.” We all have those days. You forgot to shop. Bread and cheese are your only options, turning on the stove feels like such a chore. But wait! There’s hope! Got a toaster? How about a microwave? You’re in luck! This recipe is a life saver if you’re too busy to cook or are just feelinga little lazy.

Ingredients:

  • Two slices of white or wheat bread
  • Your favorite kind of cheese (I love to use shredded cheese for this quick recipe)

Directions:

  1. Place 2 slices of bread in the toaster until it’s nice and crispy.
  2. Take toast and place the cheese between.
  3. Put the sandwich in the microwave about 15-20 seconds, no more than that!

3. Date Night Grilled Cheese

Now, we’re about to step up our game a little bit. This is our date night grilled cheese. Don’t know how to cook at all, but want to impress your date? This is the meal for you. It’s a tomato, avocado and jalapeno grilled cheese. It’s a spicy twist on your favorite classic and totally easy to make.

Ingredients:

  • A thick bread, ideally French bread or Panini style bread. This is crucial to make your date fall in love with your grilled cheese in disguise
  • Sliced Mozzarella cheese
  • 4-5 cilantro leaves. Whole or chopped
  • Chopped and seeded jalapenos, as many or as little as you want
  • Thinly sliced avocado
  • Thinly sliced tomato
  • Butter

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Place a frying pan on the stove at medium heat.
  3. Butter the outside of both slices of bread.
  4. Place buttered bread onto frying pan.
  5. Start to layer your ingredients, cheese first.
  6. As the cheese is melting, lay the tomato, jalapenos, cilantro and avocado gradually. Be sure to check the bottom of the bread and make sure it is not burning.
  7. Add another layer of sliced mozzarella cheese and place the other slice of bread atop the sandwich.
  8. Once the bottom layer is melted, slowly flip your sandwich to the other side.
  9. Apply pressure to the sandwich gradually. Once the cheese is melted and warm, take your grilled cheese and place it onto a greased cooking pan.
  10. Place the sandwich in the oven for about a minute to ensure the cheese is completely melted.

The FoodtoEat Academy Awards Presents the Nominees for Best Super “Hero”

Didja hear? The theme of the 86th Annual Academy Awards is movie heroes! This year’s Oscars will celebrate everything from emotional films about real-life heroes (“Gandhi”, “Silkwood”) to action-packed flicks about comic book heroes (“Superman”. “The Dark Knight”). All this talk about heroes started to make the FoodtoEat team hungry–not for the tights and cape-wearing crowd, but for the sandwich variety. We’ve devised our own list of the nominees for Best Super “Hero”.

In the category of Best Grinder, the clear winner is the Spicy Chicken Grinder from Big D’s Grub Truck. Standout performances by the tender chicken mixed with spicy mayo sent this hero to the top of our list. We would also like to acknowledge the heart-felt supporting role played by the fresh chopped cilantro and sweet & tangy pickled daikon. Hats off!

Oven Baked Salmon Sandwich from Cafe Delectica

The front-runner for this year’s Best Seafood Hero is rumored to be the Oven Baked Salmon Sandwich from Cafe Delectica. The Oven Baked Salmon received surprisingly favorable reviews from the critics. Roger Ebert gave it 4 stars and called the combination of salmon, avocado, sliced tomato, arugula and spicy mayo on seven grain bread an absolute sensation.

Pork Sandwich from Cheeky Sandwiches

This year was full of dramatic performances, so Cheeky Sandwiches’ Pork Sandwich was refreshingly sweet. The ensemble cast of marinated seared pork chops, caramelized apples, onions, sweet and spicy mustard gave an honest and touching performance.

Banh Mi Dac Biet/Paris Special Baguette from Paris Sandwich 

For Best Foreign Hero, our money is on the Banh Mi Dac Biet/Paris Special Baguette from Paris Sandwich. Hailing from Vietnamese cuisine, this ingenue impressed us with its classic performance which combined bacon, pork roll, and crunchy ham. Bravo!

Porchetta Sandwich from Porchetta

Critics and audiences alike were blown away by the conservatory-trained Porchetta Sandwich from Porchetta. Who knew that rolled, herbed pork roast served on ciabatta could bring literal tears to peoples’ eyes? We’d give it a standing ovation.

Fast Food Advertising – Too Good To Be True

Have you ever just stared at your fast food meal and thought, “Wow, this is not at all what I was expecting.” When you go to order fast food, you look at the displays they have outside their store. You gaze back at the large, bold font words entrapping your attention. “Succulent”, “Tender”, “Delicious”, is what they say. To top it all off, the food in the picture’s always look even better than the words can describe. All that anticipation & excitement comes crashing down when the cashier hands you the food, you unwrap it, and you see mushed up pile of bread-meat-bread.

How do McDonald’s, Subway, Wendy’s, Taco Bell do this? In the same manner that film companies put their actors & actresses through hours of make up to get them perfect for the screen, these food companies go through extensive preparation for the advertisement of their food. Burgers, tacos, and salads all go through a photo shoot where they are touched up to look like the perfect product.

The food itself is prepared at the studio. From there, the food stylists take over. For burgers, they’ll push all the main ingredients to the foreground, making them standout. Cheese & patty are steamed to make them seem more appetizing. Following this, skewers are placed in the burgers to keep everything in an attractive, upright position. Subway sandwiches always look much more bulky in the commercials because the studios will add cardboard or foam in between the layers. Fast food salads will never look like they do in the ads, and have never tasted like an normal salad should. In order to give them that fresh & tasty look, they are sprayed with a bottle of glycerin. Finally, all the food is fixed up with photoshop, to enhance every last detail.

Company respond to these claims by saying that the food moves, or that the packaging & backing may cause for the food to be squashed. Though the companies are including everything in the burger that they claimed would be there, people still preach false advertising is in play. Technically, these companies are doing nothing legally wrong, and day after day people go back to these fast food restaurants and buy their food. At the end of the day, false advertising can be shouted from the mountain tops, but will it ever effect whether people decide to go out and buy fast food?
