Reasons to Be Thankful For Cows on National Cow Appreciation Day

By Emily Collins

In case you didn’t know, it is National Cow Appreciation Day! At FoodtoEat, we think the cow doesn’t get enough credit. They’re providers of one of the main ingredients in a lot of our favorite foods, milk, and are just too cute not to love. Here are the top 5 reasons everybody should be thankful for cows on National Cow Appreciation Day:

1. Ice Cream

Not to take away the spotlight from the cow, but it is also National Ice Cream month. There would be a National Ice Cream Month without the cows contribution to ice cream – milk. Can you imagine a world without Mr. Softee on the streets with soft serve ice cream? Didn’t think so. So, let’s all say “thanks” to the cow for ice cream.

2. Milk Truck’s entire existence

If you haven’t been to one of the city’s best curators of grilled cheese – you’re seriously missing out. Milk Truck not only has tasty grilled cheese, but also make a mean milkshake. Without cows, we would never know how delicious a classic grilled cheese with a dark chocolate milkshake would be! With a name like Milk Truck, how can we not be thankful to the cow for it?

3. Nutella

At FoodtoEat, we always have a large jar of Nutella on standby. We often wonder if there’s anything Nutella doesn’t go with (spoiler alert: not likely). Nutella is made with condensed milk from our favorite animal – the cow! This yummy hazelnut spread is taking over the foodie world and we don’t mind one bit

4.  Lattes with cute latte art

Ever walk into your favorite coffee shop and get a latte with the cutest little design on it? It always makes your day just a little bit brighter – even if it is an early morning. Speaking of brightening your day, look at this adorable kitty cat latte art. Try not to “aww” out loud, I dare you.

5. 75% off Chocolate After Valentine’s Day

If we’re being completely honest, Valentine’s Day should really be re-named “75% off Chocolate Eve” because that’s what it’s become. Maybe you don’t need that entire bag of Dove Chocolate Hearts with inspiring messages in them, but you’re practically obligated to buy them because they’re that cheap. Thanks, cows, for allowing us to treat ourselves the day after Valentine’s Day.

BONUS: Pizza

You think we’d make this list without pizza? We love it all; grandma slices, greasy thin crust, $1 slices at 3 am, as long as there is cheese involved. What better way to observe National Cow Appreciation Day than ordering a pizza on FoodtoEat? Top it off with dessert (think: cheesecake, cupcakes, tiramisu – thanks cows) and you’ll find yourself loving cows as much as we do.

Introducing Nutella Pretzel Sticks: Like Pocky But Better

By Debra Liu

There’s a lot of Nutella talk these days. From Eataly’s Nutella Bar

to Dominique Ansel’s Nutella Cronut debuting this coming Monday in celebration of Nutella’s 50th anniversary.

As a self-declared expert on this chocolate hazelnut spread, as I’m sure many of you are as well, you know that it’s basically delicious with EVERYTHING. Probably even pasta.

That being said, waiting in line 45 minutes for Nutella is just NOT GOING TO HAPPEN – at least not during the workday. So we present Nutella Pretzel Sticks – like Pocky Sticks but way better.

Grab your favorite pretzel sticks and a jar of Nutella – we like the giant Costco sized ones.

Foodies of New York: Daisy Kramer

Daisy Kramer
Daisy Kramer

By Rachel Wells

Part of a series that documents real New Yorkers and their love affair with food.

Daisy Kramer is a high school senior at the Spence School. The 18 year old has lived in New York City her entire life and loves photography, singing (she’s a co-head of her school’s a capella group, Triple Trio, and is involved in the Glee club), reading, binge-watching Netflix and most importantly, loves food.

To Daisy, being a foodie is an integral part of being a New Yorker. In an interview she commented, “I think that New York has such a rich diversity of cultures and that food is a way for these cultures to intermingle. Also, food is another way for New Yorkers to communicate; we meet friends at restaurants, have interviews at coffee houses and try new cuisines all over the city.”

While there are literally a million options to choose from, her favorite place to eat is Burger Joint in the Parker Meridien Hotel, a place she first learned about from her bud, Alexandra, when they were in the 7th grade. Daisy recalls waiting in line for almost an hour, but it was well worth it. When there, Daisy orders a cheeseburger with, as she puts it, “the works; lettuce, tomato, pickles, onion, mustard, ketchup and mayo” with a side of french fries, a black and white milkshake and for good measure, a Diet Coke.

While food trucks are somewhat scarce on the UES, Daisy still branches away from the typical restaurant and café scene with quick stops at trucks like Wafles and Dinges, where she gets the city-famous option of Nutella and strawberries on a belgian waffle. For tourists, Daisy recommends trying Grimaldi’s Pizza in Brooklyn. When asked what makes this NY pizza place special she responded, “while its not the traditional New York pizza, it is the best in the city.”

Daisy loves ordering food online because of the convenience, “It’s definitely faster and more efficient than calling a restaurant.” She orders in at least once a week.

She hopes to one day become a movie producer. She will attend Northwestern’s School of Communication next fall, and while she’s essentially headed from one city to another, she will definitely miss all that New York has to offer.
