Maison De L’Éclair | Savory & Sweet Treat

maison sign The word éclair in French means flash of lightning, which pretty much sums up how quickly most people gobble these decadent treats up. Cynthia Balli, Founder of Maison de L’eclair, started a business featuring these desserts with both a sweet and a savory twist – savory eclair sandwiches. Cynthia was raised in Geneva and Paris, attended École hôtelière de Lausanne for hospitality and then earned her Masters in entrepreneurship in the US.

For Cynthia, her love of eclairs stem from childhood. Specifically, the 4 o’clock family tea time with pastries of which eclairs played a huge part. While reminiscing of fond food memories, she realized with age and maturing palates, there was a need for savory eclairs. Cynthia’s eclair favorites are her savory Smoked Salmon & Cream Cheese eclair and her Milk Chocolate & Bananas sweet eclair.

At the moment Maison De L’Eclair is an online business but she hopes to open a brick and mortar soon.

Their lunch deal comes with 2 savory eclairs, one sweet and a side salad. My personal favorite was the coffee eclair. It was very rich and the coffee flavor was spot on. It just hit the spot for me. The smoked salmon & cream cheese is a popular one and after one bite, I can clearly see why it’s so well-liked. These eclairs are catered to various tastes from vegetarians to meat eaters so you’re bound to have a favorite!

With 30 delicious options on the menu and fun sandwich names ranging from Mickey Scars to Vinnie the Butcher, it’s no wonder DiSO’s gourmet Italian sandwich food truck has made such a huge splash. They offer fresh sandwiches made from fine, imported Italian meats and cheeses from Di Palo’s in Little Italy.

This week, we were able to talk to the man behind this amazing Italian sandwich truck, Adam DiSilvestro. Adam started feeding New Yorkers about a year and a half ago and through word of mouth, loyal customers and genuinely great food his food truck has been growing a following ever since– it’s safe to say Adam’s got an awesome thing going!

He’s always been interested in food. Coming from an Italian family, “Food was something I have always wanted to try and experience in some way, so I wanted to try something classic, like an Italian sandwich stop.”

DiSO’s is a familiar name in the food community. They’re known for their long menu of any and every Italians sandwich that comes to mind. People used to tell Adam, “Take our advice, you have to cut this list down, simplify it,” and he would reply, “you know what, I have a vision and I’m just going to go with it.” Let’s all take a minute to thank Adam for sticking with his vision and offering NYC some of the best sandwiches.

Picking a sandwich is one of the more difficult things to do at DiSO’s. Some of his customers will “start at the top of the menu and work their way down.” It’s a pretty genius strategy that we at FoodtoEat probably need to try in the name of science (read: for incredible food).

Their handmade sandwiches call for a mouth-watering experience. One of their specialties, Joey Shake, is filled with Prosciutto, capicola, salami, provolone cheese, hot cherry peppers, arugula, parmigiano reggiano cheese, herbed ricotta spread, glazed balsamic dressing. You read that right; 9 ingredients, 1 sandwich. This heavenly creation is described as “the works of the Italian hero.”

The mid July heat we all know and love is beginning to settle in. Trying to find a snack to cool you down can be difficult in the Big Apple.  To help, we created a list of the top 5 ice cream places in NYC for you to check out.

1) Luca & Bosco

This is one place you do not want to miss out on. All-natural ingredients and organic flavor makes for a killer taste you won’t forget. Located in Essex Street Market, their famous Drunk & Salty Caramel scoop is one that will cool you down in a heartbeat, but will leave you wanting more.

2) Coolhaus

If you’re looking for a more unique flavor ice cream, we have the place for you. Coolhaus has all types of food that strive to push the boundaries of traditional dessert.  Their hand-dipped ice cream bars are a delicious and easy snack to have on the go in this July heat.

3) Melt

If you’re anything like me and can never decide between ice cream or cookies for dessert, I am about to make your life a lot easier. Melt has the best Ice cream sandwiches New York has to offer. One of the top flavors, the Morticia, combines crackly chocolate cookies with malted chocolate rum ice cream and is one sandwich everyone is talking about.

4) Emack and Bolios 

Emack and Bolios is one tasty treat that will leave your taste buds craving more. Their list of over 100 flavors is always kept fresh and they are constantly adding new ones.  One recent add- Space Cake is a delicious mix of cake batter ice cream with short bread cookie pieces and chunks of fudgy chocolate cake. Stop by and see which wonderful creation becomes your favorite!

5) Big Gay Ice Cream 

Last, but certainly not least is old favorite, Big Gay Ice Cream. Their funky names and fun flavors makes for a fun ice cream experience. “With a playful attitude, Big Gay Ice Cream spins a new take on old-school soft-serve by creating fun and unique ice creams, toppings, and frozen treats that appeal to a diverse mix of clientele.”

This week, I was able to meet one of New York City’s local food-lebrities, Lisa Fernandes. Lisa is the passionate chef and owner behind Sweet Chili – a “Thai-etnamese” truck with a menu full of original and incredible recipes by Lisa herself! If you didn’t know already, Lisa was the runner-up on season 4 of Top Chef, so you’re literally trying some of her winning recipes from the show.

All throughout Lisa’s life, food was her passion. She started with her mom in the kitchen, served ice cream at the mall as a teen and went on to culinary school to pursue her dream of becoming a professional chef! It’s not very often you meet someone who can say they genuinely wake up every day and want to go to work, but Lisa does. She loves her customers and makes an effort to learn their names and wants the experience to be not only delicious, but entertaining! “We make it personal, we have a good time with them, we play fun music, we’re not prim and proper, ‘good afternoon, how may we help you today?’ ” And it definitely works for them. You can walk up to Sweet Chili, get on-the-go restaurant quality food, a 1980s power ballad serenade and maybe even a Vietnamese coffee sample if you’re dancing!

Her favorite thing about owning a food truck? “We have fun! People can relate to us. They say, ‘I’m not in the mood for that today, can you just make me something?’ and we just make stuff up. People like that. You can’t do that in a restaurant.” I was able to see this first hand when I asked Lisa and her team to just “make me anything” on the menu. I was served with their flavorful Heavenly Beef over white rice with bean sprout salad and was recommended by Lisa “get the fried egg on top, it makes everything better!” She was right; the dish was indeed heavenly and the fried egg? A perfect companion to the sweet and spicy dish.

At the end of the day, Lisa’s goal is to serve up unique, amazing dishes while giving the best experience to the customer, “If you’re in a good mood when you make the food, and the person’s in a good mood when they get the food, they’re going to be in a good mood when they eat the food.” You can check out Lisa and the Sweet Chili team this summer at their frequent spots, South Street Seaport and DUMBO Lot during the week and Governor’s Island on weekends for dancing to 80s and 90s jams and cooking some of the best Thai-etnamese food in New York City!

So, How Exactly Does Social Ordering Work?

Our brand new website has an incredible new feature: social ordering. This feature gives you the power to follow your friends, become a part of a social network of foodies and order food with a group without the stress because you can literally split the bill right on our website. Check out our step-by-step guide to the social ordering process.

Step 1: Get an account. You can sign up directly on the website or sign up via Facebook. Make sure to verify your email before you start an order. Please enjoy the throwback picture.

Step 2: Invite your friends. If they don’t have an account already, have them sign up. Once you’re all signed up, you can follow each other. To find your friends on FoodtoEat, you can search by name or by email.

Step 3Find a place to order from. When searching for a place to order from, make sure the address you’re using is where the delivery is going. If the address is different, the restaurant may be out of the delivery zone.

Step 4: Start your own order. Once this order is started, you can invite as many people as you want ! If they’re not signed up on FoodtoEat, you can send them an invite via email. If they’re already signed up, just search their name and click to send them an invitation to join your order.

Step 5: Start choosing the food you all want. While you’re selecting your food items, a chat feature will pop up in the bottom right-hand corner of the page. Everybody in the order can freely chat and update each other on the status of the order.

Step 6: Once everybody is done adding food to the cart, the Order Owner will click “check out” and this will bring everybody to a new page to pay the bill.

Step 7: Paying the bill. There are 3 options for bill payment. The Order Owner has the power to decide what happens:

(1) Cash – you’ll need to gather up cash to pay for the food when it arrives,

(2) Credit Card – by clicking on Credit Card, the Order Owner is paying for the entire bill his/herself  (so generous!), and

(3) Split Bill – the Order Owner has to add their friends to the bill split by clicking on the friends’ profiles on the left hand side of the screen.

  • The bill can be split evenly by clicking on “Split Evenly” or everybody can pay for what they ordered individually by clicking on “Pay Your Own”.
  • Each person puts in their credit card number and once it is confirmed, each individual will have “ √ PAID” next to their name.

Step 8: Once everybody has paid, the order will go through to the vendor. If there are any special requests, these can be put in before the order is paid and confirmed.

Step 9: You’ll receive an email confirmation summarizing your order. If you have any urgent changes to the order, please contact the vendor you ordered from directly – this will be the most efficient way to update/change your order.

Step 10: While you’re waiting for your food to arrive, share your order on social media! Social ordering is more than just splitting a bill between friends; you are now able to follow your friends, check out where they’re ordering from, share on social media and even favorite restaurants.

On your homepage, you can see who is following you, who you’re following and their recent activity. This means you can see where your friends are ordering and who they love! It makes choosing a restaurant just a little bit easier.

Once you’re done social ordering with your friends, you can tweet or share it on Facebook! Let people know where it’s best to order from in the city.

Josh Gatewood, the southern gentleman behind Yankee Doodle Dandy’s

This week, I had the pleasure of meeting the southern gentleman behind New York’s most patriotic food truck, Josh Gatewood. Not only does Josh have making delicious southern fried chicken down to a science; he’s got an incredible story. He chose a life on food stamps and working as a fry cook over being a broker on Wall Street – all for the dream of opening his food truck.

Yankee Doodle Dandy’s, one of the newest food trucks to hit the streets, has been a long time coming. Josh admitted he spent more time thinking about his potential business than focusing on the Series 7. He would “Walk around Wall Street quizzing people, ‘what’s a better name for a chicken restaurant? Yankee’s Chicken or Yankee Doodle Dandy’s?’ ” With a stroke of luck and a $25,000 win from Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, Josh was able to give his dream some momentum.

Josh’s perseverance and dedication has brought him to where he is today – owning one of New York’s only authentic southern food trucks. Josh is committed to making his food the best it can possibly be and it definitely shows.

Their Winner Winner fried chicken special is everything you would want in a southern dish – juicy, well-seasoned and best of all: big portions. Along with four incredible chicken tenders, it is served with a giant slice of  grilled Texas toast, homemade potato salad and their original Spirit of ’76 sauce. Words cannot properly describe how delicious the Spirit of ’76 sauce is with the chicken tenders and fries. Josh says, “People come back just for the sauce.” At only $8.50, this special is a total “winner.”

At the end of the day, Yankee Doodle Dandy’s is all about bringing southern hospitality and authenticity to New York City and hopefully expanding to other major cities. Josh said, “It was roller coaster getting here. Sometimes you have those introspective moments you feel super blessed to be doing what you’re doing.”

As you may have noticed, we are undergoing a few changes here at FoodtoEat! Our new website is another step to help our mission of making online food ordering as easy as possible. In 2012 our CEO, Deepti Sharma Kapur, felt her stomach growling, went to get food and realized how long the line was at her favorite food truck. They say it only takes one spark to start a fire (or in this case, a growl to start a roar) and Deepti took advantage of this hunger and started something great.

As we embark on a new chapter in our business, we want to bring it all back to where it began and what we continue to strive for. FoodtoEat, at its very core, is about social responsibility. We want our vendors to thrive in a business that can be dangerously competitive. Our mission is to help local restaurants, food trucks and caterers get more business by putting their products online and ready to order at the tips of your fingers. While our competitors are charging 15-18% per order, we only charge 10 cents – you can order knowing you’re putting money back into the vendors’ pockets. New York City is a bit of a food mecca; keeping the food culture alive is important and taking large amounts of money from hardworking vendors is not a way to do that.

Not only do we give our vendors an easy online ordering platform, we also provide them with corporate catering connections. By signing up with FoodtoEat, vendors and clients have the chance to be a part of our growing concierge catering service. Unlike your typical online food ordering service, we help our vendors flourish by exposing their food to offices around the city. We also help our clients by bringing incredible food to their offices.
