Over at Glaze Teriyaki, ordering food is all about balance. Pick a protein and get a side of rice and salad to keep your diet healthy and body happy.  Whether you’re more of a chicken, steak, or salmon lover, there are options for everyone, complete with gluten free and vegetarian entrees.

All of the meats available at Glaze are charcoal grilled and then lavishly sauced with a subtle, tangy dressing.  The veggies are locally sourced when possible and cooked to perfection.  It is because of this that Glaze Teriyaki is always buzzing; lines extend out the door and phones ring off the hook. People love whoopie pies and people also love the convenience of a bite size dessert. Elizabeth Fife, the young, innovative founder of Batter and Cream, set out to combine these two loves.  She created a dessert that was new to the market and that everyone would enjoy: a mini whoopie pie. Fife, a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and a former investment banker on Wall Street, found herself wishing to explore a different field that allowed her to delve into her creative side through baking. She swapped her pant suits for aprons and launched Batter and Cream. Her online bakery features these miniature desserts that will spark your attention. While Batter and Cream also makes their delicious flavors in regular sized whoopie pies, most people opt to try the smaller, bite-sized versions.

The desserts come in a wide variety of uncommon flavors such as Café Au Lait and Strawberry Basil, but they also feature a whoopie “flavor of the month“. This month’s delectable flavor is Banana Nutella. Who doesn’t love a dessert that they can just pop in their mouth in one go? Their mini size allows you to try multiple different whoopie flavors without feeling too guilty. She sells the whoopie pies online starting in packs of 10. You can even customize your own order making Batter and Cream a perfect personalized birthday, ‘get better’ or congratulatory treat. Cynthia Balli, Founder of Maison de L’eclair, started a business featuring these desserts with both a sweet and a savory twist – savory eclair sandwiches. Cynthia was raised in Geneva and Paris, attended École hôtelière de Lausanne for hospitality and then earned her Masters in entrepreneurship in the US.

For Cynthia, her love of eclairs stem from childhood. Specifically, the 4 o’clock family tea time with pastries of which eclairs played a huge part. While reminiscing of fond food memories, she realized with age and maturing palates, there was a need for savory eclairs. Cynthia’s eclair favorites are her savory Smoked Salmon & Cream Cheese eclair and her Milk Chocolate & Bananas sweet eclair.

At the moment Maison De L’Eclair is an online business but she hopes to open a brick and mortar soon.

Their lunch deal comes with 2 savory eclairs, one sweet and a side salad. My personal favorite was the coffee eclair. It was very rich and the coffee flavor was spot on. It just hit the spot for me. The smoked salmon & cream cheese is a popular one and after one bite, I can clearly see why it’s so well-liked. These eclairs are catered to various tastes from vegetarians to meat eaters so you’re bound to have a favorite!

Porchetta is a tiny East Village shop that does its namesake justice. Their goal was to perfect the art of making porchetta sandwiches, a traditional Italian street food that is hard to find in the city. What makes Porchetta so special, you ask? The answer is easy; the Porchetta sandwich is the kind of food that stuns because it’s simplicity marrying quality. They’ve got the recipe down to a science, perfected the tender sandwich and intend to keep it that way.

The owners, Sara Jenkins and Matt Lindemulder, strive to create something unique, consistent and affordable for city-goers that are looking for a quick bite. The pork is cooked slowly and is just about everything you would want on a sandwich. The meat is juicy, crispy and soft. The bread is crunchy. In short, it’s roasted perfection.

With 30 delicious options on the menu and fun sandwich names ranging from Mickey Scars to Vinnie the Butcher, it’s no wonder DiSO’s gourmet Italian sandwich food truck has made such a huge splash. They offer fresh sandwiches made from fine, imported Italian meats and cheeses from Di Palo’s in Little Italy.

This week, we were able to talk to the man behind this amazing Italian sandwich truck, Adam DiSilvestro. Adam started feeding New Yorkers about a year and a half ago and through word of mouth, loyal customers and genuinely great food his food truck has been growing a following ever since– it’s safe to say Adam’s got an awesome thing going!

He’s always been interested in food. Coming from an Italian family, “Food was something I have always wanted to try and experience in some way, so I wanted to try something classic, like an Italian sandwich stop.”

DiSO’s is a familiar name in the food community. They’re known for their long menu of any and every Italians sandwich that comes to mind. People used to tell Adam, “Take our advice, you have to cut this list down, simplify it,” and he would reply, “you know what, I have a vision and I’m just going to go with it.” Let’s all take a minute to thank Adam for sticking with his vision and offering NYC some of the best sandwiches.

Picking a sandwich is one of the more difficult things to do at DiSO’s. Some of his customers will “start at the top of the menu and work their way down.” It’s a pretty genius strategy that we at FoodtoEat probably need to try in the name of science (read: for incredible food).

Their handmade sandwiches call for a mouth-watering experience. One of their specialties, Joey Shake, is filled with Prosciutto, capicola, salami, provolone cheese, hot cherry peppers, arugula, parmigiano reggiano cheese, herbed ricotta spread, glazed balsamic dressing. You read that right; 9 ingredients, 1 sandwich. This heavenly creation is described as “the works of the Italian hero.”

If you haven’t heard yet, Papaya King, the well-known NYC hot dog and fruity drinks restaurant now has its own food truck bringing hot dog loving to the streets.

Let’s rewind about 80 years ago. It’s 1932 and Gus Poulos, the founder, literally the “Papaya King” if you will, discovered papaya on a vacation to Miami. He shortly began importing the fruit to New York to make his own tropical drink. A great idea, but sadly no one came to try the drink so Gus decided to dress girls up in hula skirts and gave the drinks away for free – creative marketing for that time. New Yorkers quickly became hooked. He was inspired by his girlfriend to bring frankfurters to his juice stand on 86th and 3rd Avenue. And that was the birth of a NYC classic.

Along with their two locations on 86th and Marks Place, their bright yellow truck can be found roaming around midtown and sometimes at The Seaport.

Last week, we sat down with Wayne Rosenbaum and Jason Witkes of Papaya King to chat about their new food truck (and they fed us amazing hot dogs and fried oreos!). Wayne is really enjoying the food truck business so far. “I love it! It’s definitely different than the store, a lot more logistically challenging because of space, but we have the same methods as we do in the store. Everything is exactly the same, ” he said enthusiastically.

Wayne’s love for hot dogs sparked his creative imagination while experimenting with new recipes. His newest addition to the food truck, The Crunchy Munch, is one hot dog you definitely do not want to miss. Filled with jalapeños, sweetened pickles, sautéed onions, and crunchy potato sticks, your taste buds will be in hot dog heaven.

In New York, there are millions of places to grab a hot dog on the go, but none of them beats Papaya King, an establishment so intricately connected to the city and the heart of food entrepreneurs; a man who started with just a juice stand, ended up creating a delicious empire and now is returning to its roots and back to the streets with a food truck. Wayne says, “We have been an 82-year old brand, since 1932. So with that we are the first branded hot dog truck in history in New York.” You don’t hear that everyday from a hot dog restaurant!

Wayne and Jason have their hot dog system down to a science. New York now has its options between St. Marks place, 86th street, or their new restaurant on wheels! At the end of the day, Papaya King is a fun restaurant and food truck where there is a flavorful mix of hot dogs and fruity drinks that will leave you wanting more.

In case you didn’t know, it is National Cow Appreciation Day! At FoodtoEat, we think the cow doesn’t get enough credit. They’re providers of one of the main ingredients in a lot of our favorite foods, milk, and are just too cute not to love. Here are the top 5 reasons everybody should be thankful for cows on National Cow Appreciation Day:

1. Ice Cream

Not to take away the spotlight from the cow, but it is also National Ice Cream month. There would be a National Ice Cream Month without the cows contribution to ice cream – milk. Can you imagine a world without Mr. Softee on the streets with soft serve ice cream? Didn’t think so. So, let’s all say “thanks” to the cow for ice cream.

2. Milk Truck’s entire existence

If you haven’t been to one of the city’s best curators of grilled cheese – you’re seriously missing out. Milk Truck not only has tasty grilled cheese, but also make a mean milkshake. Without cows, we would never know how delicious a classic grilled cheese with a dark chocolate milkshake would be! With a name like Milk Truck, how can we not be thankful to the cow for it?

3. Nutella

At FoodtoEat, we always have a large jar of Nutella on standby. We often wonder if there’s anything Nutella doesn’t go with (spoiler alert: not likely). Nutella is made with condensed milk from our favorite animal – the cow! This yummy hazelnut spread is taking over the foodie world and we don’t mind one bit

5. 75% off Chocolate After Valentine’s Day

If we’re being completely honest, Valentine’s Day should really be re-named “75% off Chocolate Eve” because that’s what it’s become. Maybe you don’t need that entire bag of Dove Chocolate Hearts with inspiring messages in them, but you’re practically obligated to buy them because they’re that cheap. Thanks, cows, for allowing us to treat ourselves the day after Valentine’s Day.

BONUS: Pizza

You think we’d make this list without pizza? We love it all; grandma slices, greasy thin crust, $1 slices at 3 am, as long as there is cheese involved.
