Havana Central: Cooking with Love

By Danielle Bimston

Keeping things fun and fresh are our friends at Havana Central, known for their exciting environment and delicious eats. Started in 2002 by entrepreneur Jeremy Merrin, this Cuban restaurant has become one of the best around!  People love having the ability to get large plates of rice and beans for reasonable prices, and that’s just what Havana Central strives to give their customers.

  2. Number of Empanadas sold: Over 1 million
  3. Number of Cuban sandwiches sold: Over 800,000
  4. We cook over 4,000 pounds of pork a year
  5. We use over 130,000 limes a year – mostly for our Mojitos
  6. Our guests eat over 40,000 avocados a year

I don’t know about you, but I can’t think of any other place that sells so many Cuban sandwiches.  And, that’s not even all that they have on the menu! If you’re in the mood for a classic Cuban favorite, try the Arroz con Pollo or Pimiento Relleno.  Or if you’re dying to try a sandwich, try Sandwich de Pernil Asado, there are a ton of options!

Wonder where these delicious dishes come from? Well, Cuban food is known for it’s many influences: Spanish, French, African, Arabic, Chinese, and Portuguese cultures (that’s alot!). Traditional cooking is primarily peasant cuisine that has little concern with measurements, order and timing, but oddly enough, that’s what makes the food so unique. In fact, most of the dishes are sautéed or slow-cooked over a low flame and rely on very basic spices.  Though they’re not the most complicated, intense recipes, it’s the love used when cooking that makes Cuban food so good!

Even though Cuban food is a melting pot of so many cultures, they can all seem to agree on one thing: it’s delicious! No matter what you’re craving, Havana Central has the best atmosphere; allow us to help you transport the good vibes to your office!

If you’re in the mood for light and fresh authentic Mexican cuisine that’s full of passion and flavor, then check out Choza Taqueria.  Allow Chef Akhtar to bring south-of-the-border flavors and years of meticulous technique to the table, enhancing the delicious savory nature of his food.  While he trained with Tom Colicchio at Craft and worked as the Executive Chef at Craft Bar, Akhtar found his niche within Latin cuisine.  Today, he rocks the kitchen at Choza Taqueria, whipping up some of what we believe to be the most delicious Mexican food around.

When you get the chance to visit Choza Taquera (because we know that after reading this you won’t be able to resist!) be sure to pay attention to what makes this restaurant a true “taco destination”:

Choza Taqueria was designed to be a warm, inviting, and most importantly, reliable environment.  The staff there pride themselves with excellence service and a cozy atmosphere; hopefully after eating there, you’ll feel right at home!

The food at Choza Taqueria is inspired by Northern Mexico cuisine, known for its rich range culture and extensive grilling.  The region’s distinct flavor was created by the fusing of indigenous and Colonial culinary traditions which led to a perfect balance between delicious and savory tastes.  Each dish at the restaurant has specific sauces and toppings such as guajillo salsa and queso fresco that were designed by Chef Akhtar to best complement its natural flavors; however, if their way isn’t to your liking, Choza Taqueria is very accommodating and will make your meal just the way you like it!

Let us know if we can help you experience the Choza flavors by bringing them to your office. They have an amazing Breakfast Taco Bar that we know your staff won’t be able to resist. Complete with warm tortillas, jack cheese, eggs, guajillo salsa, and your choice of two kinds of meats, this taco bar will become one of you company’s favs! For vegetarians, they offer garbanzo beans as a vegetarian filling option for their tacos.

We also can’t forget to mention Choza Taqueria’s awesome Taco Salad Bar for a fresh, healthy option and for dessert, Choza Taqueria offers a delicious churro platter– yum!  Remember, Mexican food is good at just about any day and any time, so why not make today a Choza Taqueria day!

Maison De L’Éclair | Savory & Sweet Treat

By Chris Chen

maison sign The word éclair in French means flash of lightning, which pretty much sums up how quickly most people gobble these decadent treats up. Cynthia Balli, Founder of Maison de L’eclair, started a business featuring these desserts with both a sweet and a savory twist – savory eclair sandwiches. Cynthia was raised in Geneva and Paris, attended École hôtelière de Lausanne for hospitality and then earned her Masters in entrepreneurship in the US.

For Cynthia, her love of eclairs stem from childhood. Specifically, the 4 o’clock family tea time with pastries of which eclairs played a huge part. While reminiscing of fond food memories, she realized with age and maturing palates, there was a need for savory eclairs. Cynthia’s eclair favorites are her savory Smoked Salmon & Cream Cheese eclair and her Milk Chocolate & Bananas sweet eclair.

At the moment Maison De L’Eclair is an online business but she hopes to open a brick and mortar soon.

Their lunch deal comes with 2 savory eclairs, one sweet and a side salad. My personal favorite was the coffee eclair. It was very rich and the coffee flavor was spot on. It just hit the spot for me. The smoked salmon & cream cheese is a popular one and after one bite, I can clearly see why it’s so well-liked. These eclairs are catered to various tastes from vegetarians to meat eaters so you’re bound to have a favorite!

Maison De L’Eclair does catering, so why not have the best of two worlds all in one meal? Sharing is caring, so order some for your coworkers too. Contact us at catering@foodtoeat.com

Porchetta: A Taste of Italian Street Food in New York City

By Emily Collins

Porchetta is a tiny East Village shop that does its namesake justice. Their goal was to perfect the art of making porchetta sandwiches, a traditional Italian street food that is hard to find in the city. What makes Porchetta so special, you ask? The answer is easy; the Porchetta sandwich is the kind of food that stuns because it’s simplicity marrying quality. They’ve got the recipe down to a science, perfected the tender sandwich and intend to keep it that way.

Porchetta’s Signature Sandwich | Photo credit: Porchetta

The owners, Sara Jenkins and Matt Lindemulder, strive to create something unique, consistent and affordable for city-goers that are looking for a quick bite. The pork is cooked slowly and is just about everything you would want on a sandwich. The meat is juicy, crispy and soft. The bread is crunchy. In short, it’s roasted perfection.

potatoes

While the Porchetta sandwich is their specialty, their other dishes are not to be overlooked. The sides are just like something you’d find in an old Italian kitchen: authentic, homemade and fresh. The crispy potatoes with burnt ends are an excellent complement to the namesake sandwich.

Luckily for you, FoodtoEaters, Porchetta is geared towards take out and delivery. Their sandwiches can be delivered right to your door or pre-ordered online for pick up. Check out Porchetta’s entire menu here and the line at this small shop are known to be pretty lengthy, so order online and get the food delivered to your door. Looking to impress a date with your savvy take out skills? We think a candlelight dinner featuring Porchetta sandwiches will sweep anybody off their feet.

Thirty Sandwiches, One Truck: The Magic Behind DiSO’s Italian Sandwich Society

By Anna Lesser

discos

Behind the Food Truck is a FoodtoEat original series where we meet the amazing men and women behind our favorite mobile cuisines and share their inspiring stories. At FoodtoEat, we’re lucky to have the best food trucks NYC has to offer in our family. Here are their stories.

Adam DiSilvestro

With 30 delicious options on the menu and fun sandwich names ranging from Mickey Scars to Vinnie the Butcher, it’s no wonder DiSO’s gourmet Italian sandwich food truck has made such a huge splash. They offer fresh sandwiches made from fine, imported Italian meats and cheeses from Di Palo’s in Little Italy.

This week, we were able to talk to the man behind this amazing Italian sandwich truck, Adam DiSilvestro. Adam started feeding New Yorkers about a year and a half ago and through word of mouth, loyal customers and genuinely great food his food truck has been growing a following ever since– it’s safe to say Adam’s got an awesome thing going!

He’s always been interested in food. Coming from an Italian family, “Food was something I have always wanted to try and experience in some way, so I wanted to try something classic, like an Italian sandwich stop.”

"Big Pauly" Breaded chicken cutlet parmigano, fresh mozzarella, homemade marinara, shaved parmigano reggiano, fresh basil
“Big Pauly” Breaded chicken cutlet parmigano, fresh mozzarella, homemade marinara, shaved parmigano reggiano, fresh basil

DiSO’s is a familiar name in the food community. They’re known for their long menu of any and every Italians sandwich that comes to mind. People used to tell Adam, “Take our advice, you have to cut this list down, simplify it,” and he would reply, “you know what, I have a vision and I’m just going to go with it.” Let’s all take a minute to thank Adam for sticking with his vision and offering NYC some of the best sandwiches.

Picking a sandwich is one of the more difficult things to do at DiSO’s. Some of his customers will “start at the top of the menu and work their way down.” It’s a pretty genius strategy that we at FoodtoEat probably need to try in the name of science (read: for incredible food).

Their handmade sandwiches call for a mouth-watering experience. One of their specialties, Joey Shake, is filled with Prosciutto, capicola, salami, provolone cheese, hot cherry peppers, arugula, parmigiano reggiano cheese, herbed ricotta spread, glazed balsamic dressing. You read that right; 9 ingredients, 1 sandwich. This heavenly creation is described as “the works of the Italian hero.”

We’re excited to extend a warm FoodtoEat welcome to DiSO’s! You can now preorder their gourmet Italian sandwiches online and get their food catered for your next event. And if you want to see where their truck is currently parked, check out our Food Truck Map.
