By Hannah Poss Summertime means baseball season. For some people, there’s nothing more exciting than going to cheer for their local baseball team at their home stadium. Some other people, however, enjoy the games for reasons other than to watch the sport; baseball games have some really delicious food vendors! So this summer, if you don’t have time (or don’t want to) cheer on your favorite team in person, you can still get some of the classic baseball game foods that will make you feel as though you’re actually there. Throw a baseball themed party at the office with these foods: yankee A Stadium (and Office) Must-Have: Hamburgers Hamburgers are a traditional American food, and therefore, a must-have at a baseball game. Yankee Doodle Dandy’s food truck serves up a juicy, cheesy, All-American burger that definitely hits it out of the park. While the burgers are amazing, the name of the truck, itself, is just too fitting! Get this food truck delivered right to the office to get the real baseball game experience from outside the stadium.

In case you didn’t know, it is National Cow Appreciation Day! At FoodtoEat, we think the cow doesn’t get enough credit. They’re providers of one of the main ingredients in a lot of our favorite foods, milk, and are just too cute not to love. Here are the top 5 reasons everybody should be thankful for cows on National Cow Appreciation Day:

1. Ice Cream

Not to take away the spotlight from the cow, but it is also National Ice Cream month. There would be a National Ice Cream Month without the cows contribution to ice cream – milk. Can you imagine a world without Mr. Softee on the streets with soft serve ice cream? Didn’t think so. So, let’s all say “thanks” to the cow for ice cream.

2. Milk Truck’s entire existence

If you haven’t been to one of the city’s best curators of grilled cheese – you’re seriously missing out. Milk Truck not only has tasty grilled cheese, but also make a mean milkshake. Without cows, we would never know how delicious a classic grilled cheese with a dark chocolate milkshake would be! With a name like Milk Truck, how can we not be thankful to the cow for it?

3. Nutella

The mid July heat we all know and love is beginning to settle in. Trying to find a snack to cool you down can be difficult in the Big Apple.  To help, we created a list of the top 5 ice cream places in NYC for you to check out.

1) Luca & Bosco

This is one place you do not want to miss out on. All-natural ingredients and organic flavor makes for a killer taste you won’t forget. Located in Essex Street Market, their famous Drunk & Salty Caramel scoop is one that will cool you down in a heartbeat, but will leave you wanting more.

2) Coolhaus

If you’re looking for a more unique flavor ice cream, we have the place for you. Coolhaus has all types of food that strive to push the boundaries of traditional dessert.  Their hand-dipped ice cream bars are a delicious and easy snack to have on the go in this July heat.

If you’re anything like me and can never decide between ice cream or cookies for dessert, I am about to make your life a lot easier. Melt has the best Ice cream sandwiches New York has to offer. One of the top flavors, the Morticia, combines crackly chocolate cookies with malted chocolate rum ice cream and is one sandwich everyone is talking about.

4) Emack and Bolios 

Emack and Bolios is one tasty treat that will leave your taste buds craving more. Their list of over 100 flavors is always kept fresh and they are constantly adding new ones.  One recent add- Space Cake is a delicious mix of cake batter ice cream with short bread cookie pieces and chunks of fudgy chocolate cake. What is the one thing we crave more at this time of year than any other? Yup, ice cream. And who better to talk to about our favorite cold creamy dessert (and food in general) than Max Falkowitz, Editor and Ice Cream Maker-in-Residence of Serious Eats: New York.

Over the years, he has provided us with infinite ice cream wisdoms making our existence that much sweeter, from showing us the easiest way to make vanilla ice cream at home, bringing peanut butter honey ice cream into our lives, to more recently, introducing us to ice cream’s best friend – really decadent double chocolate cake from Park Slope’s L’Albero Dei Gelati.

Max grew up in Forest Hills, Queens in a food-loving family. “We’re all a big family of emotional eaters so it was celebratory and stress relieving,” says Max. But it was in college that his interest in cooking and technology began. He stumbled into his career at Serious Eats a few years ago after a friend dared him to reach out to the now incredibly popular food blog. Shortly after, Max became a columnist writing about ices and ice cream recipes. “I owe it all to luck and being at the right place at the right time,” he told me.

For almost 4 years now, he’s been developing and writing ice cream recipes. One of his long outstanding interests is how egg yolk quality affects ice cream.  His favorite flavor is “a really good vanilla” and when asked what the craziest ice cream he ever concocted was, he replied, “I’ve done one with duck fat, caramel and soy sauce. It was good, but very intense.”

And of course, we had to have a lengthy discussion about donuts. He enjoys going to Peter Pan Donut & Pastry Shop in Brooklyn for their chocolate cake doughnuts. A little tip from Max: if you get there around 10am, you can pretty much get them super fresh. He’s also a big fan of Dough; specifically their blood orange and lemon poppy seed yeast doughnuts, which are more fluffy.

As for more savory foods, he loves lentils and sandwiches. Sorriso Italian Pork Store in Astoria is one of his favorites; the friendliest Italian deli he’s ever been to.

According to Max, there’s always food in the Serious Eats office, samples ranging from Cheez-Its to ice cream. “On days we can write about salad, we are thrilled, we love salad,” he said with a laugh.

As you may have noticed, we are undergoing a few changes here at FoodtoEat! Our new website is another step to help our mission of making online food ordering as easy as possible. In 2012 our CEO, Deepti Sharma Kapur, felt her stomach growling, went to get food and realized how long the line was at her favorite food truck. They say it only takes one spark to start a fire (or in this case, a growl to start a roar) and Deepti took advantage of this hunger and started something great.

As we embark on a new chapter in our business, we want to bring it all back to where it began and what we continue to strive for. FoodtoEat, at its very core, is about social responsibility. We want our vendors to thrive in a business that can be dangerously competitive. Our mission is to help local restaurants, food trucks and caterers get more business by putting their products online and ready to order at the tips of your fingers. While our competitors are charging 15-18% per order, we only charge 10 cents – you can order knowing you’re putting money back into the vendors’ pockets. Welcome to the first in a series that documents real New Yorkers and their love affair with food. 

Anna Hollander is currently a high school Senior at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School where she is a vocal major. When she’s not at school or in rehearsal for her school’s singing group, she’s taking music lessons or hanging out with friends. Next fall, the petite ball of energy will attend Lehigh University, but is unsure of what she’ll major in. “There is so much to choose from,” she commented, “I really have to sink my teeth into a few different courses before I can confidently say what my future plans are.”

Anna, the Brooklyn native, has lived in the city her entire life and is definitely a “food person”. Though many would guess otherwise, as she is the size of half of a toothpick, she loves her grub and is always looking for a new place to try. Her favorite place of all is Gila’s Nosh on East 23rd street. She found Gila’s through her older brother whose best friend opened it with his mom, Gila. “It’s authentic Israeli food – everything really is amazing” and she is confident that there is nothing bad on the menu. She is convinced that “Gila could even make cardboard taste delicious.”

She loves the interpersonal relationships she has with various vendors. She’s glad she’s found FoodtoEat, though, as it has allowed her to make even more of those relationships. “I love that I can easily find food trucks on the site using the interactive map”, she notes. Her favorite food trucks include Wafles and Dinges, where she always tries something new, and Rickshaw Dumpling Bar, where she liked the pork dumplings – she was sad to hear it had closed for good. “I think if FoodtoEat had existed sooner, many restaurants that have failed would still be around – it’s always upsetting to hear that a place you love has closed.”

Anna suggests that tourists try many different pizza places but that they also stay open to any food opportunity that presents itself. “In New York, you have to be fearless – try the food on the trucks and off the carts, try a cuisine you’ve never heard of.” She loves NYC’s diversity of intellectual opinions, experiences, and of race and background. She loves that the creativity of all different people can shine through on the streets in various mediums whether it be graffiti, dance or cuisine.
