Porchetta: A Taste of Italian Street Food in New York City

Porchetta is a tiny East Village shop that does its namesake justice. Their goal was to perfect the art of making porchetta sandwiches, a traditional Italian street food that is hard to find in the city. What makes Porchetta so special, you ask? The answer is easy; the Porchetta sandwich is the kind of food that stuns because it’s simplicity marrying quality. They’ve got the recipe down to a science, perfected the tender sandwich and intend to keep it that way.

The owners, Sara Jenkins and Matt Lindemulder, strive to create something unique, consistent and affordable for city-goers that are looking for a quick bite. The pork is cooked slowly and is just about everything you would want on a sandwich. The meat is juicy, crispy and soft. The bread is crunchy. In short, it’s roasted perfection.

While the Porchetta sandwich is their specialty, their other dishes are not to be overlooked. The sides are just like something you’d find in an old Italian kitchen: authentic, homemade and fresh. The crispy potatoes with burnt ends are an excellent complement to the namesake sandwich.

In case you didn’t know, it is National Cow Appreciation Day! At FoodtoEat, we think the cow doesn’t get enough credit. They’re providers of one of the main ingredients in a lot of our favorite foods, milk, and are just too cute not to love. Here are the top 5 reasons everybody should be thankful for cows on National Cow Appreciation Day:

1. Ice Cream

Not to take away the spotlight from the cow, but it is also National Ice Cream month. There would be a National Ice Cream Month without the cows contribution to ice cream – milk. Can you imagine a world without Mr. Softee on the streets with soft serve ice cream? Didn’t think so. So, let’s all say “thanks” to the cow for ice cream.

2. Milk Truck’s entire existence

If you haven’t been to one of the city’s best curators of grilled cheese – you’re seriously missing out. Milk Truck not only has tasty grilled cheese, but also make a mean milkshake. Without cows, we would never know how delicious a classic grilled cheese with a dark chocolate milkshake would be! With a name like Milk Truck, how can we not be thankful to the cow for it?

3. Nutella

At FoodtoEat, we always have a large jar of Nutella on standby. We often wonder if there’s anything Nutella doesn’t go with (spoiler alert: not likely). Thanks, cows, for allowing us to treat ourselves the day after Valentine’s Day.

Sweet Chili: Thaietnamese Food With a Side of Power Ballads

This week, I was able to meet one of New York City’s local food-lebrities, Lisa Fernandes. Lisa is the passionate chef and owner behind Sweet Chili – a “Thai-etnamese” truck with a menu full of original and incredible recipes by Lisa herself! If you didn’t know already, Lisa was the runner-up on season 4 of Top Chef, so you’re literally trying some of her winning recipes from the show.

All throughout Lisa’s life, food was her passion. She started with her mom in the kitchen, served ice cream at the mall as a teen and went on to culinary school to pursue her dream of becoming a professional chef! It’s not very often you meet someone who can say they genuinely wake up every day and want to go to work, but Lisa does. She loves her customers and makes an effort to learn their names and wants the experience to be not only delicious, but entertaining! “We make it personal, we have a good time with them, we play fun music, we’re not prim and proper, ‘good afternoon, how may we help you today?’ ” And it definitely works for them. You can walk up to Sweet Chili, get on-the-go restaurant quality food, a 1980s power ballad serenade and maybe even a Vietnamese coffee sample if you’re dancing!

Her favorite thing about owning a food truck? “We have fun! People can relate to us. They say, ‘I’m not in the mood for that today, can you just make me something?’ and we just make stuff up. People like that. You can’t do that in a restaurant.” I was able to see this first hand when I asked Lisa and her team to just “make me anything” on the menu. I was served with their flavorful Heavenly Beef over white rice with bean sprout salad and was recommended by Lisa “get the fried egg on top, it makes everything better!” She was right; the dish was indeed heavenly and the fried egg? A perfect companion to the sweet and spicy dish.

At the end of the day, Lisa’s goal is to serve up unique, amazing dishes while giving the best experience to the customer, “If you’re in a good mood when you make the food, and the person’s in a good mood when they get the food, they’re going to be in a good mood when they eat the food.” You can check out Lisa and the Sweet Chili team this summer at their frequent spots, South Street Seaport and DUMBO Lot during the week and Governor’s Island on weekends for dancing to 80s and 90s jams and cooking some of the best Thai-etnamese food in New York City!

So, How Exactly Does Social Ordering Work?

Our brand new website has an incredible new feature: social ordering. This feature gives you the power to follow your friends, become a part of a social network of foodies and order food with a group without the stress because you can literally split the bill right on our website. Check out our step-by-step guide to the social ordering process.

Step 1: Get an account. You can sign up directly on the website or sign up via Facebook. Make sure to verify your email before you start an order. Please enjoy the throwback picture.

Step 2: Invite your friends. If they don’t have an account already, have them sign up. Once you’re all signed up, you can follow each other. To find your friends on FoodtoEat, you can search by name or by email.

Step 3Find a place to order from. When searching for a place to order from, make sure the address you’re using is where the delivery is going. If the address is different, the restaurant may be out of the delivery zone.

Step 4: Start your own order. Once this order is started, you can invite as many people as you want ! If they’re not signed up on FoodtoEat, you can send them an invite via email. If they’re already signed up, just search their name and click to send them an invitation to join your order.

Step 5: Start choosing the food you all want. While you’re selecting your food items, a chat feature will pop up in the bottom right-hand corner of the page. Everybody in the order can freely chat and update each other on the status of the order.

Step 6: Once everybody is done adding food to the cart, the Order Owner will click “check out” and this will bring everybody to a new page to pay the bill.

Step 7: Paying the bill. There are 3 options for bill payment. The Order Owner has the power to decide what happens:

(1) Cash – you’ll need to gather up cash to pay for the food when it arrives,

(2) Credit Card – by clicking on Credit Card, the Order Owner is paying for the entire bill his/herself  (so generous!), and

(3) Split Bill – the Order Owner has to add their friends to the bill split by clicking on the friends’ profiles on the left hand side of the screen.

  • The bill can be split evenly by clicking on “Split Evenly” or everybody can pay for what they ordered individually by clicking on “Pay Your Own”.
  • Each person puts in their credit card number and once it is confirmed, each individual will have “ √ PAID” next to their name.

Step 8: Once everybody has paid, the order will go through to the vendor. If there are any special requests, these can be put in before the order is paid and confirmed.

Step 9: You’ll receive an email confirmation summarizing your order. If you have any urgent changes to the order, please contact the vendor you ordered from directly – this will be the most efficient way to update/change your order.

Step 10: While you’re waiting for your food to arrive, share your order on social media! Social ordering is more than just splitting a bill between friends; you are now able to follow your friends, check out where they’re ordering from, share on social media and even favorite restaurants.

On your homepage, you can see who is following you, who you’re following and their recent activity. This means you can see where your friends are ordering and who they love! It makes choosing a restaurant just a little bit easier.

Once you’re done social ordering with your friends, you can tweet or share it on Facebook! Let people know where it’s best to order from in the city.

As you may have noticed, we are undergoing a few changes here at FoodtoEat! Our new website is another step to help our mission of making online food ordering as easy as possible. In 2012 our CEO, Deepti Sharma Kapur, felt her stomach growling, went to get food and realized how long the line was at her favorite food truck. They say it only takes one spark to start a fire (or in this case, a growl to start a roar) and Deepti took advantage of this hunger and started something great.

As we embark on a new chapter in our business, we want to bring it all back to where it began and what we continue to strive for. FoodtoEat, at its very core, is about social responsibility. We want our vendors to thrive in a business that can be dangerously competitive. Our mission is to help local restaurants, food trucks and caterers get more business by putting their products online and ready to order at the tips of your fingers. While our competitors are charging 15-18% per order, we only charge 10 cents – you can order knowing you’re putting money back into the vendors’ pockets. New York City is a bit of a food mecca; keeping the food culture alive is important and taking large amounts of money from hardworking vendors is not a way to do that.

Not only do we give our vendors an easy online ordering platform, we also provide them with corporate catering connections. By signing up with FoodtoEat, vendors and clients have the chance to be a part of our growing concierge catering service. Unlike your typical online food ordering service, we help our vendors flourish by exposing their food to offices around the city. We also help our clients by bringing incredible food to their offices. Whether it’s an ice cream bar, build your own burger or a food truck directly to your office, we’re always finding ways to help our vendors cater to our awesome clients like Tumblr and Hulu.

Part of a series that documents real New Yorkers and their love affair with food. 

Meet the founder of the Foodies of New York Series: Rachel Wells – a high school senior at the Spence School. She is the senior head and co-founder of the school’s first computer programming club (it’s partnered with the organization Girls Who Code!) which has gone from 9 to about 40 members in its first semester in the high school alone. At a local Hackathon, she and her team of two other girls built an app that won 1st place for being the best app to use Ordr.In’s API. While her newfound passion for the science is taking her in directions she never expected to go, she has a strong focus on and love for hospitality and hopes to one day hold a C-level position at a hotel chain.

Rachel has lived in NYC since birth, but spent a year in Switzerland. When asked why she returned to NYC, she admitted “I love my school, and couldn’t imagine graduating anywhere else – but also the food. I missed the variety and the accessibility of the different restaurants and food-related events.” She loves the number of options available in NYC; that there is food for every budget, every taste, every concern or diet, every occasion and that it’s there at almost every hour.

“There’s something romantic about the food culture of the city and how everyone is interconnected through it somehow,” she added, “every story about the city or being out in the city either starts or ends in a restaurant. Food is a part of everything you do here, and the more you know about different places to go and eat, the more people you are exposed to and the more you learn, experience and share with one another – there’s always a lot of passion in the room when you go somewhere that isn’t your typical food chain.” She suggests that every tourist tries Tao Uptown. The restaurant is extremely beautiful at both of their locations but Rachel loves that the giant buddha at the uptown location has become iconic. The food there, in her words, is “incredible and will never disappoint.”

Her favorite restaurant however, is Móle on the UES. “It’s hands-down the best food in this city – I order about 10 orders of the signature corn appetizer, which is like Mexican corn from street fairs on steroids”, she gushed as she re-tied her brown leather Steve Madden high-tops. She discovered Móle when her family went for her mother’s birthday dinner two years ago. Since then, it’s where she goes every time she has a reason to celebrate. “Honestly, one of the best parts about deciding where I’ll attend college next fall will be the Móle dinner afterwards”, she added as she giggled.

When asked about food trucks she explained that she was originally apprehensive to try food out of someone’s truck, but after trying some of the local vendors she quickly changed her mind – “I could tell it was all fresh, clean and most importantly, made with love.” Her favorite vendor is Mac Truck NYC, a truck that specializes in macaroni and cheese. She loves the classic Fried Mac Bites and claims they are “more addictive than any drug Walter White could create.” She orders in once a week exclusively from FoodtoEat. As someone who is extremely interested in hospitality in its entirety, she loves the push for sustainability for local restaurants.
