Reasons to Be Thankful For Cows on National Cow Appreciation Day

By Emily Collins

In case you didn’t know, it is National Cow Appreciation Day! At FoodtoEat, we think the cow doesn’t get enough credit. They’re providers of one of the main ingredients in a lot of our favorite foods, milk, and are just too cute not to love. Here are the top 5 reasons everybody should be thankful for cows on National Cow Appreciation Day:

1. Ice Cream

Not to take away the spotlight from the cow, but it is also National Ice Cream month. There would be a National Ice Cream Month without the cows contribution to ice cream – milk. Can you imagine a world without Mr. Softee on the streets with soft serve ice cream? Didn’t think so. So, let’s all say “thanks” to the cow for ice cream.

2. Milk Truck’s entire existence

If you haven’t been to one of the city’s best curators of grilled cheese – you’re seriously missing out. Milk Truck not only has tasty grilled cheese, but also make a mean milkshake. Without cows, we would never know how delicious a classic grilled cheese with a dark chocolate milkshake would be! With a name like Milk Truck, how can we not be thankful to the cow for it?

3. Nutella

At FoodtoEat, we always have a large jar of Nutella on standby. We often wonder if there’s anything Nutella doesn’t go with (spoiler alert: not likely). Nutella is made with condensed milk from our favorite animal – the cow! This yummy hazelnut spread is taking over the foodie world and we don’t mind one bit

4.  Lattes with cute latte art

Ever walk into your favorite coffee shop and get a latte with the cutest little design on it? It always makes your day just a little bit brighter – even if it is an early morning. Speaking of brightening your day, look at this adorable kitty cat latte art. Try not to “aww” out loud, I dare you.

5. 75% off Chocolate After Valentine’s Day

If we’re being completely honest, Valentine’s Day should really be re-named “75% off Chocolate Eve” because that’s what it’s become. Maybe you don’t need that entire bag of Dove Chocolate Hearts with inspiring messages in them, but you’re practically obligated to buy them because they’re that cheap. Thanks, cows, for allowing us to treat ourselves the day after Valentine’s Day.

BONUS: Pizza

You think we’d make this list without pizza? We love it all; grandma slices, greasy thin crust, $1 slices at 3 am, as long as there is cheese involved. What better way to observe National Cow Appreciation Day than ordering a pizza on FoodtoEat? Top it off with dessert (think: cheesecake, cupcakes, tiramisu – thanks cows) and you’ll find yourself loving cows as much as we do.

6 Resolutions You Should NOT Make in 2014

By Rosie O’Regan

New Year’s is right around the corner, and for many 2014 represents the chance to leave behind the trials and tribulations of 2013 and focus on becoming a brand new you. For those of you resolving to quit smoking, lose weight and spend more time with friends and family—I salute you!

Turning over a new leaf, starting a new chapter, having a fresh start—great. However there are some resolutions that you absolutely must avoid, because you will just be setting yourself up for failure.

Help yourself, your friends, and your family avoid uttering the following phrases:

“In 2014, I’m going to ______”

1. “Stop eating chocolate.”

I wish you luck with this one but first you have to stop by The Cupcake Stop and try any of their chocolaty-goodness cupcakes. From Chocolate Caramel Pretzel to S’mores to Nutella Crunch, this place is heaven for any chocoholic.

2. “Drink less”

Juice cleanses, kale smoothies, vitamin-infused water, oh my! When the latest liquid diet craze starts to overwhelm you, pop into Ryan Maguire’s for a good old-fashioned standby.

3. “Eat less junk food and desserts”

Do I want to eat healthier? Yes. Can I ever say no to Coolhaus’s architecturally delicious ice cream sandwiches? No. The eternal struggle continues.

4. “Go vegan or vegetarian”

Every now and then I consider being a vegetarian, but then I pass by Phil’s Steaks and find myself unable to pass up their mouthwatering Whiz Steak.

5. “Cut down on caffeine”

Nuchas is known for their empanadas, but they also sell a variety of breakfast items—and what kind of breakfast is complete without a steaming cup of joe? Their delicious coffee and espresso is supplied by La Colombe Coffee Roasters.

6. “Cook more and eat out less”

Dying to try that homemade pizza recipe? Knock yourself out but first take a look at how Valducci’s Original Pizza does it…

Having said that, allow me to dial back the cynicism and say that yes—you will defy all expectations and get through 2014 without breaking a single resolution. We believe in you, we do! Just promise that you’ll indulge yourself in a last supper with some of the foods above before embarking on your journey to self-improvement.

So, if you’re feeling on the fence about your New Year’s resolutions visit us at www.foodtoeat.com and we’ll help you break them! Check out our site to see if any of these delicious treats are near you.

Insomnia: the Sweet Infection

And another Manhattan neighborhood is down with Insomnia.  No, not sleeplessness—every New Yorker is afflicted with that (hence the whole coffee-in-the-hand thing).  We mean the only place that will deliver freshly baked cookies to your door until 3 a.m.  So for those of you insomniacs who don’t live near NYU or any of the other 4 locations, the company has opened up a rather convenient location in midtown, on 53rd street between 3rd and 2nd avenues.

The best part is, it doesn’t end at cookies.  You can get brownies, ice cream, and of course, some milk to wash down the sweet treats with.  And we all know that along with new beginnings comes celebration.  Whether you never tried insomnia or are a chronic insomniac, you can take part by going to their FaceBook fan page and scrolling down to print the free cookie coupon and 3 for $2 deal coupon to use at the new store.  Honestly, no other cookie bakery will cut that much slack, so why not use both deals?  Separately, of course.  For the grand opening of the new location, just “like” their page and follow their website—you’ll find yourself on top of every sweet deal all the while staying up and giving yourself insomnia.  Pun totally intended.

Electronic Tip Jar Makes Debut

Tip jars are a common sight at many local food establishments, coffee shops and even food trucks. However customers don’t always have cash on hand, especially as Americans increasingly rely on credit cards and mobile payment options for all their daily purchases. A new invention called DipJar aims to solve this problem, accepting credit and debit card payment for customers to fully show their gratitude for great service.

DipJar is a New York invention by Ryder Kessler, inspired by the tip jars seen in Manhattan coffee shops that often go neglected. Particularly during rushes baristas often serve dozens of customers without seeing even one tip. With DipJar, one swipe of a credit card will leave a $1 tip, with each additional swipe adding a dollar to the tip amount. The product is still being tested, and Kessler said during this pilot period the company will cover any processing fees and distribute the full $1 tip from each dip. Eventually however, they will have to charge a credit card processing fee to cover the cost of the system.

Alternative credit card payment systems have been catching on lately, with Square, LevelUp and others gaining traction among many small businesses. Square has even partnered with Starbucks, signaling an increased demand for innovative mobile payment solutions. DipJar is currently being tested at a few locations, including Oren’s Daily Roast.

Ultimately DipJar should provide a convenient way for customers to reward good service even without cash on hand. While they seem to be catching on mostly with food related businesses, DipJar could easily expand to any service-based industry.
