The 4th of July is coming up so that means that it’s almost time to celebrate. This day commemorates our country’s birthday and so to honor this day, we patriots, celebrate all things American. What better way to celebrate than through devouring classic, old-fashioned, all-American food? Even better, salute this special day by exploring some of America’s newest twists to its beloved classics. While you can never say no to a nice, juicy, traditional cheeseburger or a big bowl of ooey gooey mac n cheese, try some of these revamped classics that are sure to spark some fireworks.

This chain has an incredible range of patty options, toppings and sauces to choose from so even a habitué of this joint will never grow bored.

While you can get pretty creative and funky making your own burger at The Counter, if you haven’t tried the famous ramen burger from Ramen Co. yet, it’s a must-have, so make your way to one of their New York  locations or catch them at the popular Brooklyn food festival, Smorgasburg. This crowd-pleasing combination of a juicy beef patty, sandwiched by pan-fried “buns” made entirely from ramen noodles, still provides the eater with the feel of a traditional American burger patty, but puts a new, creative, Asian-inspired twist on a classic.

Another common American bite perfect for the 4th of July is a hot dog. Who doesn’t love a standard foot long on a doughy bun with just the right ketchup to mustard ratio? Even though a traditional hot dog is always a crowd pleaser, if you’re looking to explore your horizons and broaden your palette, try an authentic Polish kielbasa from the Old Traditional Polish food truck instead. The owners of this food truck are serving up pure Polish kielbasas and pierogis like your grandmother used to make them. So, if you find yourself tired of the well-worn American hot dog, track down the Old Traditional Polish food truck and celebrate July 4th with Poland’s version of the American classic.

Another must-have food to celebrate America’s birthday is a legendary Katz’s deli sandwich. While you may find yourself waiting on a seemingly never-ending line down the block, the wait is beyond worthwhile. With creations such as vegetable muffalatas and shrimp po-boys, their menu transports you directly to New Orleans. The fried chicken biscuit sandwich is also unmistakably inspired by the South. If you’re in the area, get a much needed dose of Southern hospitality by trying one of Cheeky’s bold sandwiches.

While you’re out and exploring these eateries that whip up American originals, make sure to also try S’MAC  to get your fill of the celebrated and beloved cheesy pasta. With 30 delicious options on the menu and fun sandwich names ranging from Mickey Scars to Vinnie the Butcher, it’s no wonder DiSO’s gourmet Italian sandwich food truck has made such a huge splash. They offer fresh sandwiches made from fine, imported Italian meats and cheeses from Di Palo’s in Little Italy.

This week, we were able to talk to the man behind this amazing Italian sandwich truck, Adam DiSilvestro. Adam started feeding New Yorkers about a year and a half ago and through word of mouth, loyal customers and genuinely great food his food truck has been growing a following ever since– it’s safe to say Adam’s got an awesome thing going!

He’s always been interested in food. Coming from an Italian family, “Food was something I have always wanted to try and experience in some way, so I wanted to try something classic, like an Italian sandwich stop.”

DiSO’s is a familiar name in the food community. They’re known for their long menu of any and every Italians sandwich that comes to mind. People used to tell Adam, “Take our advice, you have to cut this list down, simplify it,” and he would reply, “you know what, I have a vision and I’m just going to go with it.” Let’s all take a minute to thank Adam for sticking with his vision and offering NYC some of the best sandwiches.

Picking a sandwich is one of the more difficult things to do at DiSO’s. Some of his customers will “start at the top of the menu and work their way down.” It’s a pretty genius strategy that we at FoodtoEat probably need to try in the name of science (read: for incredible food).

Their handmade sandwiches call for a mouth-watering experience. One of their specialties, Joey Shake, is filled with Prosciutto, capicola, salami, provolone cheese, hot cherry peppers, arugula, parmigiano reggiano cheese, herbed ricotta spread, glazed balsamic dressing. You read that right; 9 ingredients, 1 sandwich. This heavenly creation is described as “the works of the Italian hero.”

In case you didn’t know, it is National Cow Appreciation Day! At FoodtoEat, we think the cow doesn’t get enough credit. They’re providers of one of the main ingredients in a lot of our favorite foods, milk, and are just too cute not to love. Here are the top 5 reasons everybody should be thankful for cows on National Cow Appreciation Day:

1. Ice Cream

Not to take away the spotlight from the cow, but it is also National Ice Cream month. There would be a National Ice Cream Month without the cows contribution to ice cream – milk. Can you imagine a world without Mr. Softee on the streets with soft serve ice cream? Didn’t think so. So, let’s all say “thanks” to the cow for ice cream.

2. Milk Truck’s entire existence

If you haven’t been to one of the city’s best curators of grilled cheese – you’re seriously missing out. Milk Truck not only has tasty grilled cheese, but also make a mean milkshake. Without cows, we would never know how delicious a classic grilled cheese with a dark chocolate milkshake would be! With a name like Milk Truck, how can we not be thankful to the cow for it?

3. Nutella

At FoodtoEat, we always have a large jar of Nutella on standby. We often wonder if there’s anything Nutella doesn’t go with (spoiler alert: not likely). 5. 75% off Chocolate After Valentine’s Day

If we’re being completely honest, Valentine’s Day should really be re-named “75% off Chocolate Eve” because that’s what it’s become. Maybe you don’t need that entire bag of Dove Chocolate Hearts with inspiring messages in them, but you’re practically obligated to buy them because they’re that cheap. Thanks, cows, for allowing us to treat ourselves the day after Valentine’s Day.

BONUS: Pizza

You think we’d make this list without pizza? We love it all; grandma slices, greasy thin crust, $1 slices at 3 am, as long as there is cheese involved. If you’ve ever explored Midtown, you know the Eggstravaganza cart has been a staple for years. Recently though, the cart has been upgraded to a brand new Eggstravaganza food truck! This week, I was able to meet the man behind the truck, Arturo Macedo, the owner and founder of Eggstravaganza. His journey started with working in a restaurant 15 years ago and he’s been in the food business ever since,  “A friend introduced me into the business and it looked interesting to me. So, I decided to start a mini food cart.”

We should all be very thankful for his friend because the Eggstravaganza truck is an awesomely unique take on the New York breakfast scene.

The new truck started taking on the streets of Manhattan just three months ago and the menu has grown because of the newfound space. It has something for everybody; from New York inspired breakfast wraps, like the Stock Broker (egg whites, mushroom, avocado and cheese) to classic sandwiches, like bacon, egg and cheese. Not feeling breakfast? Eggstravaganza also serves lunch! Their Three Amigos hero is bound to please any meat lover (chorizo, chicken and skirt steak) and the Mambo Italiano wrap (roasted vegetables, mozzarella and Italian seasoning) is a favorite with the veggie crowd.

When I asked how he comes up with his recipes? It’s a family affair, “We get the family together, kids, cousins; my wife is the toughest critic. We’ll say, ‘put this one in here, here and here’ and that’s how we work on the next recipe.” You know the food is good when kids are giving it the thumbs up.

I tried one of their most popular menu items; the Mexican wrap and I can definitely see why it’s so popular. The ingredients include: eggs (obviously!), grilled onion, pepper, Mexican potatoes, chorizo fresco and cheese on a tomato basil wrap. This wrap? It transcends the breakfast realm. I would probably eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner if I could. It’s got everything you’d want for breakfast combined in one satisfying wrap. It’s a great way to kickstart your early mornings in the city.

Which Food Trucks Would Your Favorite Game of Thrones Characters Absolutely Love?

Here in New York City, we’re lucky enough to have access to some of the most fantastic restaurants, food trucks and carts to exist. Unfortunately for Westeros, the food truck trend just has not caught on, but we’re dreamers here at FoodtoEat and matched a few of our favorite Game of Thrones characters with some of our local food trucks and carts.

Tyrion Lannister might be a small guy, but he certainly knows how to pack a big punch (or slap if you’re Joffrey). His personality always leaves you wanting to know more. This is exactly how we feel about spicy grilled chicken mini tacos from Kimchi Taco Truck. These tacos may be mini, but with ingredients like cilantro and kimchi chipotle aioli, they come with quite the kick.

If you follow Game of Thrones, you know Daenerys is the mother of dragons. Her dragon eggs are incredibly rare, but Daenerys managed to hatch three on the show. Luckily, here in NYC [chicken] eggs aren’t extinct (although dragon eggs are still hard/impossible to come by). If you share Daenerys’ passion for eggs, head over to the Eggstravaganza Cart! Every morning, they serve several different egg dishes: from classic western omelets to Mexican wraps with eggs, chorizo, potatoes and much more. We are certain Daenerys would be very pleased with Eggstravaganza.

Happy National Grilled Cheese Month! 3 Ways to Revamp Your Favorite Classic

Grilled cheese: An American classic, a staple of your childhood. The tasty, quick meal has come very far in the past few years and even has the entire month of April to celebrate its deliciousness. We all have our tried and true favorites, but to celebrate the delightful sandwich, here are some great, new ways to revamp your classic comfort food!

1. The Grilled Cheese Roll

First up is my personal favorite: the grilled cheese roll. They’re adorable, functional and only take about 10 minutes to prepare. These treats are perfect for a party appetizer or to eat on the go. If you like tomato soup with your grilled cheese, this recipe is the best way to maximize your dunking experience!

Ingredients:

  • 2 slices of your favorite type of pre-sliced bread
  • 2 slices of American cheese
  • 2 tbsp of butter
  • Optional: a can of tomato soup

Directions:

  1. Take your two slices of bread (or more if it’s for a party!) and cut off the crust.
  2. Use a rolling pin to flatten your bread. If you don’t have one, a wine bottle always works.
  3. Take your slices of American cheese and place them on the flattened bread.
  4. Take the bread and cheese and roll it very tightly.
  5. In the meantime, take your 2 tbsp of butter and let it simmer in a frying pan on medium heat.
  6. Make sure your grilled cheese rolls are nice and tight and place them seam down in the pan. This will prevent your grilled cheese rolls from unrolling in the pan.
  7. Once the edge is sealed, flip the rolls so they’re cooked evenly for 4-5 minutes.
  8. Serve on a plate with a bowl of tomato soup while they’re still hot!

2. The Lazy Grilled Cheese

Next up is what I like to call “the lazy grilled cheese.” We all have those days. You forgot to shop. Bread and cheese are your only options, turning on the stove feels like such a chore. But wait! There’s hope! Got a toaster? How about a microwave? You’re in luck! This recipe is a life saver if you’re too busy to cook or are just feelinga little lazy.

Ingredients:

  • Two slices of white or wheat bread
  • Your favorite kind of cheese (I love to use shredded cheese for this quick recipe)

Directions:

  1. Place 2 slices of bread in the toaster until it’s nice and crispy.
  2. Take toast and place the cheese between.
  3. Put the sandwich in the microwave about 15-20 seconds, no more than that!

3. Date Night Grilled Cheese

Now, we’re about to step up our game a little bit. This is our date night grilled cheese. Don’t know how to cook at all, but want to impress your date? This is the meal for you. It’s a tomato, avocado and jalapeno grilled cheese. It’s a spicy twist on your favorite classic and totally easy to make.

Ingredients:

  • A thick bread, ideally French bread or Panini style bread. This is crucial to make your date fall in love with your grilled cheese in disguise
  • Sliced Mozzarella cheese
  • 4-5 cilantro leaves. Whole or chopped
  • Chopped and seeded jalapenos, as many or as little as you want
  • Thinly sliced avocado
  • Thinly sliced tomato
  • Butter

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Place a frying pan on the stove at medium heat.
  3. Butter the outside of both slices of bread.
  4. Place buttered bread onto frying pan.
  5. Start to layer your ingredients, cheese first.
  6. As the cheese is melting, lay the tomato, jalapenos, cilantro and avocado gradually. Be sure to check the bottom of the bread and make sure it is not burning.
  7. Add another layer of sliced mozzarella cheese and place the other slice of bread atop the sandwich.
  8. Once the bottom layer is melted, slowly flip your sandwich to the other side.
  9. Apply pressure to the sandwich gradually. Once the cheese is melted and warm, take your grilled cheese and place it onto a greased cooking pan.
  10. Place the sandwich in the oven for about a minute to ensure the cheese is completely melted.

Because Beer Makes Everything Better: How to Make a Corned Beef, Drunken Onion & Cheddar Cheese Sandwich

Bread and cheese are arguably the only two food groups a person needs to survive. Pizza, Bagel +Cream Cheese, and of course (who can forget), grilled cheese. Slices of crunchy bread sandwiched with oozing cheese and butter. Someone pass me a bib, I’m salivating. What are your thoughts about amping up the cheesy experience for St.Patrick’s Day by making it a full-blown Irish extravaganza? Corned beef tucked between sheets of melty cheddar, with drunken caramelized onions filling in the cracks. Rye bread pulls everything together and a schmear of butter locks in the flavors.

Corned Beef, Drunken Onion & Cheddar Cheese Sandwich
recipe adapted from Closet Cooking

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small sweet onion, sliced
  • 1 cup Guinness beer
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon whole grain mustard (we like Maille or Grey Poupon brand)
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 2 slices rye bread
  • 1/4 cup cheddar, shredded, room temperature
  • 2 ounces cooked corned beef, sliced or shredded, warm

Directions:

  1. Heat the butter in a pan over medium heat.
  2. Add the onions and saute over a fairly high heat until translucent.
  3. Add Guinness in 1/3 cup increments, until it has completely dissolved (this should take about an hour).
  4. Mix in the Worcestershire sauce. Remove from heat.
  5. Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat. Toast the bread on one side. Remove it from the heat. Spread the toasted side with mustard and layer onions, corned beef and cheese inside. Close the sandwich. Cook it for 3-4 minutes per side on a medium high heat.
  6. Serve this while it’s piping hot for the best taste.

5 Healthy Breakfast Food Ideas You Haven’t Heard Of

Most days I would pay someone $50 just to let me cuddle with my comforter for 20 more minutes. So what about the Monday mornings that I need to peep my eyes open at 5:30 AM (EW)? It’s hard to get out of my cozy bed, avoid hitting snooze 100 times and get moving. I find a healthy breakfast and just a few yoga stretches changes everything.

I know, you’ve heard it all before. This is craziness, madness, sheer insanity. You just want your 4 cups of coffee and a bagel with cream cheese. I guarantee that for the first week of waking up 15 minutes early, you will have to force yourself. You’ll be all “damn you Jane, just 5 more minutes…”. After you break through the first few days of annoyance, you won’t regret it. You’ll be in a better mood throughout the day, you’ll be calm and focused and most importantly, less tired.

Do yourself a favor and try this. Wake up 15 minutes early. Do a few of your favorite stretches. Say a word or two of gratitude. Reminding yourself about what you are lucky to have is the best way to relax your mind and prevent later irritations over miniscule things during the day.. Am I ranting? I’m wrapping up I promise.

Eat breakfast, and don’t bore yourself by eating the same instant oatmeal everyday. Spice things up, prepare a little bite the night before if that’s what it takes. Below are a few of my morning go-to’s that I rotate during the week. They are all healthy and delicious.

1. Blueberry Almond Overnight Oatmeal

Combine 1/4 cup of organic rolled oats with 1/4 cup of vanilla flavored greek yogurt, a drop of almond or vanilla extract, 1/3 cup of skim milk. Shake it up in a plastic container with a tight lid or a little glass jar. Add a handful of blueberries and leave it in the fridge overnight. In the morning, add a tsp of almond butter and a few more berries on top.

2. Peanut Butter Banana Quinoa

For this one, I use quinoa that I have leftover from making salads during the week. I always set a little aside and leave it in the fridge. Microwave 1/3 cup of cooked quinoa for 45-60 seconds with a splash of milk. Top it with a drizzle of honey, a tablespoon of creamy peanut butter and one small mashed banana. Gently mix and enjoy.

*This can also be made with oatmeal.

3. Cheesy Honey Mustard Egg Wrap

Warm up a whole wheat wrap on a skillet. Scramble one egg gently. Top it with a slice of your favorite (melty) cheese. Spread your favorite mustard (I like spicy whole grain) on the wrap and drizzle a little honey on. Add the egg and cheese, wrap up, slice in half.

4. Chia Seed Porridge
 
Mash 1/2 of a banana in a small bowl. Stir in 1 tsp of vanilla extract, a pinch of cinnamon, 1/2 cup of almond/coconut/soy milk and 2 tbs of chia seeds. Mix and let it sit for at least 1 hour, or preferably, overnight. Top with dried fruit, berries or toasted nuts. Serve cold.

5. Avocado Tomato Toast
 
Toast a large slice of whole wheat bread. Mash 1/2 of an avocado with 1 tbs of fresh lime juice. Season liberally with salt and pepper. Spread the avocado on the toast and add 2 slices of fresh tomato. You can also add a sunny side up egg over the entire thing if you’re extra hungry!
