Happy National Hot Dog Day! | Papaya King

By Danielle Bimston

Looking for some of the best hot dogs New York City has to offer? Check out our friends at Papaya King. Identifying themselves with the motto “accept no imitations”, this hot dog heaven is bringing you classic, one-of-a-kind franks and delicious tropical drinks.

IMG_0088Started back in 1931 by a Greek immigrant striving to pursue the American Dream, Papaya King began as a juice bar called Tropical Hawaiian Drinks.  Owner, Gus Poulos, opened the stand to express his passion for blending up fresh, fruity drinks.  However, not everybody in NYC had the same love for juice that Gus did right away.  It took time, but eventually, Gus’s juice bar began to take off.  However, it was when Gus married a young German woman and began serving frankfurters at his joint that Papaya King was put on the map. New Yorkers fell in love with Gus’s refreshing juices and savory hot dogs.

IMG_0054Today, Papaya King is still keeping things as classic as they can; serving quality franks and delicious drinks to happy and loyal customers.  And, they’re being noticed for their efforts—Julia Child said that Papaya King serves the “best hot dogs in New York” and Martha Stewart named them one of her “guilty pleasures.”

IMG_0005It’s quite obvious that the magic that made Papaya King such a hit in the first place is still as present as ever. They’re still serving up classic Franks with toppings such as chili, cheese, and peppers as well as All Beef Sausages with coleslaw & pickles and Sautéed Onions & Peppers with Chili.  Plus, they still have all of their amazing tropical drinks to try such as Papaya Pride or Banana Daiquiri.

IMG_0038We’re sure that no matter what you try at Papaya King, it’ll bring you back to old school New York City.  And, if you want to bring the family oriented, welcoming Papaya King vibe to the office, take advantage of our catering options.  Celebrate #NationalHotDogDay right with the best hot dogs around from this amazing restaurant.

Mayhem & Stout: Fresh and Flavorful

By Danielle Bimston

Though it began as a weekend experiment at Brooklyn’s Dekalb Market in November 2011, this sandwich spot is on it’s way to the top.  At Mayhem & Stout, they’re serving up artisan slow-braised sandwiches topped with amazing sauces and fresh add-ons.

IMG_3730Since their debut, Mayhem & Stout has expanded to a brick and mortar storefront, participating in more than two dozen popular pop-up markets and events throughout the NYC area.  Maybe it’s because their sandwiches are always made to order and served on crisp, airy handmade bread that Mayhem & Stout is so successful; we can assure you, your taste buds will fall in love.

IMG_3715 Not only is their bread absolutely remarkable, but their meats are slow braised until they are succulent and fall-off-the-bone tender.  With options like Braised Pulled Pork, Short Rib & Brisket, and Braised Vegetarian “Meat” Balls, what’s not to love! Creating a sandwich at Mayhem & Stout is like finding the perfect combination of savory flavors that build upon one another to create something magical.  So, make sure you try some of their delicious homemade sauces such as Blueberry Sriracha, Horseradish Creme, or Black Cherry Mustard.

IMG_3723And, if you’re not feeling a sandwich, Mayhem & Stout’s menu includes satisfying salads, hearty rice bowls, and indulgent twists on mac & cheese, as well as desserts from Robicelli’s. Our clients have loved both the sandwiches and rice bowls for lunch in the office. Plus, there are a variety of gluten free, vegan, and vegetarian options; everyone is sure to find something they can enjoy!

All of the meats available at Glaze are charcoal grilled and then lavishly sauced with a subtle, tangy dressing.  The veggies are locally sourced when possible and cooked to perfection.  It is because of this that Glaze Teriyaki is always buzzing; lines extend out the door and phones ring off the hook. And, if you’re not in the mood for a heavy meal, keep it light and fresh by choosing from Glaze’s large selection of gourmet sides such as Steamed Edamame, Crispy Gyoza Dumplings, and Shishito Peppers.

Empellon Al Pastor: Taking Tacos to the Next Level

By Danielle Bimston

Over at Empellon, they’re taking tacos to the next level.  Mixing traditional Mexican style with Lebanese immigrant flare, the chefs at Empellon Al Pastor are making pork “shepherd’s style”. Here lies the birth of an amazing Mexican fusion restaurant.

While so many chefs face immense pressure to find an innovative approach to cuisine, those at Empellon Al Pastor have found comfort and success in keeping things simple and authentic. Here’s how the magic happens in the kitchen:

  1. Pork meat is sliced thin
  2. The meat is dressed with a green salsa, followed by a red one
  3. Finally, a sliver of pineapple and a bit of onion is added

See, how simple! Over at Empellon Al Pastor, this is how they operate; keeping it savory. But, it doesn’t stop with the meat. Their tortillas are created in-house as well! In a process called Nixtamalization, field corn is boiled and ground into aromatic masa for their tortillas (they’re gluten free!).  And, you never have to worry that your tortilla isn’t fresh because this cooking technique happens in the kitchen every single morning.

Who doesn’t want a taste of the freshest food around town? Bring Empellon Al Pastor to your office and try their Beef & Caramelized Onion Tacos, Red Chili Pork Tacos, or for vegetarians, Nopales (that’s cactus, how unique!). There’s nothing better than spicing things up with a fresh fusion of two distinct tastes.

Taking meals from the plate to a completely portable medium is what makes Eight Turn Crepe so irresistible!

If you’re in the mood for light and fresh authentic Mexican cuisine that’s full of passion and flavor, then check out Choza Taqueria.  Allow Chef Akhtar to bring south-of-the-border flavors and years of meticulous technique to the table, enhancing the delicious savory nature of his food.  While he trained with Tom Colicchio at Craft and worked as the Executive Chef at Craft Bar, Akhtar found his niche within Latin cuisine.  Today, he rocks the kitchen at Choza Taqueria, whipping up some of what we believe to be the most delicious Mexican food around.

When you get the chance to visit Choza Taquera (because we know that after reading this you won’t be able to resist!) be sure to pay attention to what makes this restaurant a true “taco destination”:

The food at Choza Taqueria is inspired by Northern Mexico cuisine, known for its rich range culture and extensive grilling.  The region’s distinct flavor was created by the fusing of indigenous and Colonial culinary traditions which led to a perfect balance between delicious and savory tastes.  Each dish at the restaurant has specific sauces and toppings such as guajillo salsa and queso fresco that were designed by Chef Akhtar to best complement its natural flavors; however, if their way isn’t to your liking, Choza Taqueria is very accommodating and will make your meal just the way you like it!

Extraordinary Sandwiches: Why Stick to Boring, Old Basics When We’ve Got Something New & Exciting?

By Danielle Bimston

Contrary to popular belief, sandwiches don’t have to be a boring lunch option.  We’ve found some of the best restaurants striving to correct the sandwich’s damaged reputation.  These vendors bring character to the sandwich, adding hand carved meat, savory sauces, and even a little dessert to the mix.  Say goodbye to the dull, old PB&J and hello to some new sandwiches that are going to blow your mind and change your eating habits!

Mayhem & Stout

IMG_3732This delicious Murray Hill restaurant specializes in custom meat and sauce sandwiches. At Mayhem and Stout, you can choose from their selection of over 15 types of meats and sauces as well as a grand selection of add-ons to build your own creation or stick with one of their signatures such as Braised Pulled Pork or Short Rib and Brisket.  Either way, each sandwich is guaranteed to contain the freshest handmade bread and succulent, tender meat.

Paris Sandwich

Now here’s something unique…Vietnamese sandwiches, also known as banh mi! What better way to spice up your sandwich life than finding out how different cultures handle the dreaded, boring lunch option.  Well, now it’s quick and easy to delve into the world of Vietnamese sandwich cuisine at Paris Sandwich.  Offering a variety of traditional Vietnamese creations such as the Paris Special and Pork Rolls, we’re sure you’ll find something new to explore here.

We bet you’ve never tried a Taiwanese sandwich before, but here’s your chance! The Bao Shoppe creates small baos which are offered in a myriad of combinations with over 5 topping options such pork belly and ponko crusted pollock.  And, if you’re not in the mood for a sandwich, they have some other interesting Taiwanese dishes to try including scallion pancake wraps.

Ramen Co

Ramen Co is just about as untraditional as it gets, transforming the sandwich into something completely new.  Not only is this sandwich comprised of ingredients other than the typical bread and spread, it also takes on a new form…the burger! Mixing together his Japanese and American heritage, Chef Kienzo created the Ramen Burger to represent the meshing of two cultures.  This new creation became popular at the 2013 Smorgasburg and since then has completely taken off.
