By Hannah Poss Summertime means baseball season. For some people, there’s nothing more exciting than going to cheer for their local baseball team at their home stadium. Some other people, however, enjoy the games for reasons other than to watch the sport; baseball games have some really delicious food vendors! So this summer, if you don’t have time (or don’t want to) cheer on your favorite team in person, you can still get some of the classic baseball game foods that will make you feel as though you’re actually there. Throw a baseball themed party at the office with these foods: yankee A Stadium (and Office) Must-Have: Hamburgers Hamburgers are a traditional American food, and therefore, a must-have at a baseball game. Yankee Doodle Dandy’s food truck serves up a juicy, cheesy, All-American burger that definitely hits it out of the park. While the burgers are amazing, the name of the truck, itself, is just too fitting! Get this food truck delivered right to the office to get the real baseball game experience from outside the stadium.

Meet the New Truck On the Block: Yankee Doodle Dandy’s

This week, I had the pleasure of meeting the southern gentleman behind New York’s most patriotic food truck, Josh Gatewood. Not only does Josh have making delicious southern fried chicken down to a science; he’s got an incredible story. He chose a life on food stamps and working as a fry cook over being a broker on Wall Street – all for the dream of opening his food truck.

Yankee Doodle Dandy’s, one of the newest food trucks to hit the streets, has been a long time coming. Josh admitted he spent more time thinking about his potential business than focusing on the Series 7. He would “Walk around Wall Street quizzing people, ‘what’s a better name for a chicken restaurant? Yankee’s Chicken or Yankee Doodle Dandy’s?’ ” With a stroke of luck and a $25,000 win from Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, Josh was able to give his dream some momentum.

Josh’s perseverance and dedication has brought him to where he is today – owning one of New York’s only authentic southern food trucks. Josh is committed to making his food the best it can possibly be and it definitely shows.

Their Winner Winner fried chicken special is everything you would want in a southern dish – juicy, well-seasoned and best of all: big portions. Along with four incredible chicken tenders, it is served with a giant slice of  grilled Texas toast, homemade potato salad and their original Spirit of ’76 sauce. Words cannot properly describe how delicious the Spirit of ’76 sauce is with the chicken tenders and fries. Josh says, “People come back just for the sauce.” At only $8.50, this special is a total “winner.”

At the end of the day, Yankee Doodle Dandy’s is all about bringing southern hospitality and authenticity to New York City and hopefully expanding to other major cities. Josh said, “It was roller coaster getting here. Sometimes you have those introspective moments you feel super blessed to be doing what you’re doing.”

Prison Food: Cheaper than FoodtoEat

As a college student, I try to keep my daily food expense around $0, and, every day, I fail with reinvigorated bravado.

Somehow though, over a million Americans every day eat for $2.30, tops.

Wait, what?

The missing piece of information here is these people are all members of America’s healthy prison population, and their food is so cheap for a number of reasons, most of which I’m incapable of replicating.

Let’s talk numbers for a second. As of 2005, prisons were at 111% capacity, with some states like California hitting 141%. So, it’s safe to say that prisons are full. The issue is that prisons are constantly getting full-er. That 2005 statistic represents a 10% increase in prison population since 2001.

With large growth in population and budgets growing at a much, much slower pace, prisons find ways to cut costs—food costs. In 2001, prisons spent $955 on food per inmate per year—that’s $2.62 per day. In 2005 that number fell to $2.30. Places like North Carolina even managed to reach $0.52 per inmate per day.

Again, what?

There are a few explanations as to why prison food is so inexpensive. The go-to answer is that it’s all some form of disgusting broth/slime. But that’s apparently not completely true.

The New York Times claims that many prisons eat the same foods we do, but their method of production is different. I might put my leftovers in a ziplock bag. Prisons “regethermically” freeze everything. Nothing goes to waste, no nutrients are lost, and they cut their expenses by around 15%.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics features another explanation involving prison-operated farms and food processing centers with the helpful interplay of economies of scale.

More recently, NPR featured a story claiming most food was “canned, frozen, or fried.” (Cases of botulism in the past year would back up NPR.)

I would imagine that all of these explanations are responsible for the low costs to some extent. Cost of food per inmate varies widely across the country, implying that different strategies are used in different states.

Hilariously, as prison food costs decrease, requests for Kosher meals increase. Clark County Jail says that, in 2011, 1% of their inmates requested Kosher meals, which they are, by law, committed to honor. In 2013, 10.8% of their prison population requested Kosher meals.

I highly doubt so many Orthodox Jews were arrested in the past two years. It’s much more likely that the request for Kosher meals says a lot more about the state of the non-Kosher cooking.  Again, point for NPR.

Food innovation in prisons isn’t limited to cost reduction though. Prison food is also used as punishment.  The “Food Loaf” has been the subject to multiple court cases, in which prisoners argue their 8th amendment right was violated, subjecting them to “cruel and unusual punishment.” The “Food Loaf” is a mix of pretty tasteless foods (cabbage, oatmeal, etc.) with no seasoning. It doesn’t sound like cruel and unusual punishment, but, by multiple accounts, it makes you sick and is, all in all, disgusting.

Prisons are also helping their inmates to break into (har har har) the food industry after they are released. As of 2005, 956 of the 1,821 prisons in the U.S. had some form of vocational training program. The Northeastern Correctional Center has a restaurant open to the public staffed with inmates who are in a food service training program. This program model even hopped across the pond and is being integrated into prison culture in the U.K. One training program cites recidivism rates of only 12.5% among those who participated—compared with 47% nationally.

A hundred and fifty years ago, meals in prison were made from scratch every day. With the increases in both technology and population, such culinary nostalgia is misplaced. While I’m sure my wallet looks at the state penitentiary’s food budget today with a mix of envy and pain, my stomach is still thinking about “Food Loaf.” At least now I know what to serve my brothers next time I make dinner.

Restaurants See Growth in Meat and Seafood Orders

In a year where unemployment remained mostly stagnant and economic growth continued to move at a snail’s pace, there is some good news for restaurateurs about consumer spending habits. In 2012 food dishes with protein, particularly anything with meat or seafood were ordered at a higher growth rate than dishes without protein. Restaurant owners should rejoice because protein dishes tend to be 35% more expensive than non-protein dishes and are often paired with alcoholic beverages, demonstrating that customers are on average spending more when they go out to eat.

Information was gathered by GuestMetrics, with a database of POS transactions accounting to over $8 billion in sales and over 250 million dollars worth of checks from restaurants and bars throughout the United States. Although the split between protein and non-protein dishes is near equal, dishes with protein grew at a 2.1 percent rate over the last year, while dishes without protein grew at a sluggish 0.3 percent rate.

Among the types of meat that customers ordered, beef showed a huge gain while seafood dishes showed a slight decline. However, given the higher cost of seafood this trend makes sense given the economic pressure most Americans are under. Ribeye steaks, filet steaks and burgers in particular showed the most growth in 2012.

Among seafood dishes, shrimp, bass, clams and tuna decreased in consumption the most. However some of these losses were offset by an increase in oyster, salmon, grouper and trout orders. Most of these trends in seafood simply reflect changes in demand. Oysters in particular have grown more popular from inclusion in pop culture, while bass may have suffered because of environmental and health concerns. Ultimately, the growth of protein-rich dishes can only help restaurant growth and act as a guide for restaurateurs to update their menus appropriately.
