Dinner is Coming…Get Ready with the Official Game of Thrones Cookbook

Ok, who is excited? The Game of Thrones Season 4 premiere is right around the corner and “Two Swords”, the first episode, will most definitely make us salivate for more, especially since Red Viper is in town.

But, don’t make the mistake of watching the premiere without eating Game of Thrones inspired food – pork pie or honeyfingers anyone?

If you’ve read the books, it’s hard to miss George R. R. Martin’s exquisitely detailed words describing the characters, their surroundings, and most importantly, the foods they enjoy eating:

“Later came sweetbreads and pigeon pie and baked apples fragrant with cinnamon and lemon cakes frosted in sugar, but by then Sansa was so stuffed that she could not manage more than two little lemon cakes, as much as she loved them.” – A Game of Thrones

What began as a simple craving for lemon cakes, ended up being the start of a wonderful food journey across the Seven Kingdoms for Chelsea Monroe-Cassel, who created her Game of Thrones inspired food blog, Inn at the Crossroads, after being unable to find Elizabethan lemon cake recipes online. “There were a lot of lemon pound cake recipes and very modern, generic cakes with lemon but nothing really seemed imbued with that certain something from the series. And so I thought, I’ll make my own,” she told me.

A few months after the blog started, Chelsea and her cookbook co-author, Sariann Lehrer, were in talks about a cookbook deal and the rest is [medieval] history. Chelsea was a Classical Studies major in college and her love of history is evident throughout her blog and the cookbook. “I tried to take into account the spice trade, and climate and things like that when reconstructing recipes,” says Chelsea. The book is incredibly well researched, filled with full-color photos, and includes relevant food passages from all five books in the series.

The more than 100 recipes in A Feast of Fire & Ice, the Official Game of Thrones Cookbook, are divided by region, ranging from Mutton in Onion-Ale Broth from The Wall to Buttered Beets from The North. According to Chelsea, “foods from Winterfell are amazing in the winter, somewhat predictably. I think the food in King’s landing is amazing and very rich.”
