LunCHeap: 7 Good Eats, Even Better Prices

By: Samvida Patel

We know the New Yorker life—you will easily spend $30.00 on food per day if you don’t cook. But keeping your eye out for places offering lunch specials can save you a significant amount of money, while keeping you satiated at the same time. Here are a few of our favorite deals in neighborhoods near you!

1. Murray Hill
Chinese Mirch

Chinese Mirch- 28th street and Lexington Avenue
Lunch Special- $9.99-$10.99
Yelp: 3 Stars

This Indochinese restaurant serves very generous portions of food for lunch: a hot and sour or wonton soup, an appetizer, dumpling and entree. And like many new restaurants and cafes, the main course is “Chipotle-esque”: you pick your protein, one of five tangy sauces and rice. At the end, you will either walk home very, very full or with a box of leftovers. Save big, Savor big.

2. Hell’s Kitchen
Breeze Thai
Breeze Thai-French Kitchen- 9th Avenue, between 45th and 46th streets
Lunch Prix Fixe – $6.95
Yelp: 3.5 Stars

The prix fixe lunch includes a choice of a tasty appetizer, Tofu Vegetable Soup or a Mixed Green Salad, and an entrée. The entrée choices are numerous, including the usual Thai offerings, salads, French entrees, and South East Asian Style Sandwiches, all of which are customizable! Seriously, talk about the tastiest, biggest bang for the littlest buck!

3. Midtown East

Radicchio Pasta & Risotto Co.- 53rd street between 2nd and 3rd avenues
Lunch Special- $10.00-$14.00
Yelp: 3.5 Stars

Affordable pastas and risottos are hard to come by, given Italian restaurants’ rather romantic and decorative reputation. Radicchio Pasta & Risotto Co cooks up fresh pastas and risottos, packs them with two warm pieces of bread, a salad or soup, and a tiny sweet. The treat is usually a baby biscotti, but if you’re lucky, it could be a ladyfinger shaped brownie. The sauces already use little to no cream, so just request whole-wheat pasta. It’s what we like to call, “clean comfort.”

4. Greenwich Village
Bare Burger- La Guardia Place between West 3rd Street and Bleecker Street
NYU Special- $8.95
Yelp: 4 Stars

An all natural, organic beef patty and farm-fresh ingredients on a soft brioche bun for a reasonable price? Yep, you betcha! A lot of the burger and sandwich varieties are pricy, but that’s precisely why the burger joint has offered an exclusive NYU student special. You get a basic burger, (special ingredients may cost a bit extra), a side of hand-cut, crispy fries, and a soda for half the cost of a burger or sandwich alone. Is that a deal or is that a steal?

5. East Village

Cafetasia- 8th Street between Broadway and University Place
Lunch Special- $8.00
Yelp: 3.5 Stars

When NYU students think of cheap lunch, Cafetasia is the first thing that pops into mind. Their $8 lunch special, which constitutes of an appetizer and an entrée from a select menu, is a deal. Cheese and Crab Rangoon is a definite winner of all the starters and Basil Udon noodles and Green Curry never fail to deliver both taste and satisfaction. Also, you’ll find that Cafetasia does not charge extra based on protein type. If you want more variety or a tapas-style experience, you might choose the 3 appetizers for $12 deal.

6. East Village AGAIN!
Penny Farthering
The Penny Farthing- 13th Street & 3rd Avenue
Lunch Special- $8-$9
Yelp: 3 Stars

The Irish gastropub’s penny pasta is surefire tongue-tantalizer and the Cajun Salmon Sandwich is a delicious and wholesome item that comes with one of the best-cooked fries in town, or a salad or soup. Not a sandwich person? That’s okay, you can choose from a hearty salad, pasta or fish of the day.

7. West Village
Hummus Place

Hummus Place- The corner of Barrow Street & Bleecker Street
Lunch Special- Starts at $8
Yelp: 4 Stars

Mmmmm Mediterranean food! The Hummus Place is one of the few food places that will leave you satisfied without spiking your blood glucose levels. You can chose one entrée and receive a free side for the lunch special! Though not counted in the special (what else would you expect?), the dessert is a guilt-free source of sweetness in case you have a sweet tooth.
