America is often seen as the greatest country in the world. There are few ideas and creations that don’t have a home here. However, when it comes to potato chip flavors, and unique ones at that, the rest of the world has always championed. With the latest PepsiCo collaboration of Pepsi and FritoLay in China– Pepsi-Cola and Chicken Flavored potato chips, America is left in the dust yet again.
The potato chip flavor idea was birthed from the popularity of Cola Chicken in China and provides a shining example of America’s influence on the rest of the world. Wings are braised in Cola to produce a syrupy glaze. The idea is the product of Pepsi’s advertising agency BBDO Shanghai and PepsiCo’s R&D and marketing teams. The culmination of the two brands does not come as a surprise after Richard Lee, PepsiCo’s CMO in China, took control in 2010 and is the first person to control both the company’s food and beverage brands in China.
Lays rolls out a new flavor yearly and this year’s goal was fusion. Prior flavors in China have included lemon tea, cucumber, and hot and sour fish soup.
